The Trouble With Hancock

hancock.jpgLast-minute problems may be plaguing the drunken superhero comedy Hancock. This Saturday Will Smith was seen in full Hancock gear filming last-minute reshoots in Times Square. How is this possible for a movie set to release on July 2? Sadly, it's not a good sign for our leather-clad hero. More details on the reshoot, set pictures and more Hancock troubles after the jump.

After a couple of test screenings and the trailer, Hancock and crew were seen filming in New York City this Saturday night. How is this possible with the release date steadily approaching? Maybe they are searching for a new ending that will allow them the PG-13 rating that sources say they're having trouble getting. With the movie reportedly including scenes of Hancock shoving a man's head up his behind and unleashing destructive sperm, it's no wonder they're struggling with the MPAA. Hopefully Hancock can get his crew in gear for their release in July. (To be fair, Smith's last movie, I Am Legend, reshot its ending in November, only about a month before its mid-December release date, and it did great.) [The Bad And The Ugly]

  • There better be an R or Uncensored DVD so we can see the movie that was actually made

  • I'm actually really looking forward to this movie. I love a good superhero movie just like the next bloke, but a good spoof would really blow me away. Seeing as "Superhero movie" is just something I refuse to see, this had better be good. Supersperm or not.

  • What little hope I had for this movie has now been thoroughly dashed.

  • Oh, good idea, let's try to tack on a different ending this late in the game. It worked so well for I Am Legend, after all.

Seriously, this film looks like a total train wreck.

  • dont worry, there will be a directors cut dvd, there always is.

  • I think its a conspiracy by the movie industry: Planned "last minute" reshoots and rating haggling just so they can release multiple DVDs and recoup money that way if the actual theatrical release bombs.

  • I find it telling that a big star like Charleze Theron (Mmmmm..) is in it, but there is almost no publicity about that. I'll bet she is pressuring her management to downplay her role to protect her career.

  • i'm looking forward to this :)

  • I Am Legend did great in the box office, but it was far from great.

  • Films do last minute reshoots all the time. Not a big deal.

  • Bring on the boozing superhero... finally a hero for the the masses.

  • And I think he shoves a guys head up someone else's heinie.

The tone is so uneven, I'm not sure it's going to get close to I Am Legend money.

Shouln't do as bad as Speed Racer though.

  • It sucks, Beavis says it sucks and i know it sucks, but i'll see it twenty times anyway. Hyuk, hyuk, hyuk, hyuk

  • @deckard97:

You mean boozing, working-to-middle class superhero. Iron Man already did the boozing superhero thing. Ah, actually, so did Ms. Marvel and she's a government working stiff.

  • This really could be as simple as the Director/Editor not having the angles they want for a particular scene.

If they run it by the test screen audience and get back a bunch of "I really liked it but this one scene was hard to follow" then out they go to get some more footage.

  • I know this is going to be awful, and I know it's going to make an ungodly amount of cash anyway, but I hope that Will Smith learns his lesson this time and stays away from sci-fi for a good long while.

  • @Belabras:
I really hope they listened to everyone and decided to not trash it yet, ergo, re-shoot.

  • I got this figured out.

A)I know i am not allowed to have an opinion, because i didn't pay $80,000.00 to learn what i was allowed to like.

    B) It is far better to make up your mind before the movie come out, less possibility of outside influences.

    C) Everything sucks but "Doomsday" and "Speed Racer".

D)Will Smith Sucks, Christian Bale sucks, wassface in "Transformers" sucks. Did i forget anything? I need a crib sheet.

    E) Oh, yeah, and i'm a dog. I always forget that.

  • @diverguy: Actually, it is generally considered a very bad sign in the industry. A sure sign of floppage, empirically (I am Legend notwithstanding).

  • @Lampbane: Uh good point, middle class with booze... middle shelf booze...

  • @codydog:
You always do so well until you bring up the dumb dog line...

  • He hasn't hit bottom unless he's got a bottle of Monarch.

  • I heard Will Smith is working with tom Cruise on Battlefield Earth 2.

  • @jbq:

Not really. The Lord of the Rings cameras were still running up to a week before the film was "in the can". The XMen films, that were filmed not far from where I live had reshoots going on a couple of months prior to release. It happens all the time.

  • Sure, Legend did well by-the-numbers, but it still sucked roundly. Financial success means jack-shit these days, in regards to the quality of the final product. I'm going to be shocked if this manages anything above 40-50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • What makes this different is that there's lots of word about a troubled production.

The script has been floating around in development hell for years, the film has already submitted to the MPAA twice and received an R rating, which was unacceptable.

Charlize Theron is in the movie too, and barely appears in trailers. Why?

  • @diverguy: I'm not saying it's inevitable (nor that I necessarily believe it myself, however in this case I certainly do), I'm saying that it is considered a bad sign in the industry.

  • My guess is that "the Trouble with Hancock" is that Will Smith needs to stop making sci-fi movies.

  • Yes, let us jump to a conclusion about something we've never seen. That's always fun.

  • @Plague: Nobody knows you are a dog on the internet.
