The first trailer for Joss Whedon's Dollhouse is finally out, and it shows the spookiness of waking up as a different person every time you're programmed with a new identity. Plus there's more detail of Eliza Dushku kicking ass in different outfits — but she's a lover as well as a fighter. It's going to be a long wait until January. Update: We took down this old version of the trailer, but you can view a new version here.
Adelle Dewitt (Olivia Williams) fights prejudice against her company by explaining that the "Actives" are, "the truest souls among us." And yet Echo remembers nothing of her time spent as an Active. Paul Smith (Tahmoh Penikett) is busy trying to uncover the Dollhouse, which seems to be an urban legend to those not in the know. Not a lot of time is spent on the other Actives, and the focus is mostly on Echo (Dushku). Hands down, the best scene is the wedding where the bride's ex has Dushku programmed to be wildly in love with him. [Dollverse]

Cool, very cool. I'm excited especially for more shower scene.
The one thing I would have changed, that last scene, they should have reshot it with her wearing something else, to suggest she's saying the same thing again, but at another time, that woulda been niftier.
Anywho, I'm in.
I was very creeped out about the idea of this show at first but I think now I see where Joss is going. Have to say though, whatever they do the most amazing effect will be if Dushku learns how to act.
@pinkiedeathhead: Ouch! She's not that bad.
This looks pretty awesome. At least the concept will stay fresh for a while - the way Whedon has conceived it seems to allow unlimited possibilities/storylines.
Eh, plays a little too much to the "bunch of hot girls in a house" comment I think. Still watchable though.
@Aethyr: NO! TV shows need to take more from BSG and such where they have a distinct goal. Take Smallville for example, or Stargate, where the fuck did those shows go plotwise once they got past a little bit.
Again with the Papyrus font Joss? I forgave you for it because Serenity was so good, but now you're pushin it.
And you know its gonna be moody because they use Massive Attack and it is the year 1999!!!
Joss, I love you. This looks great. But PLEASE take it somewhere original. The second a Rimbaldi Manuscript shows up I'm done.
bitgod is right that would have been cooler. As it is I think it'll have alot of heart!
That one guy is Helo from BSG! And looks interesting, ill catch a few eps and go from there. And who wants to bet that Nathan Fillion will have a cameo or a guest appearance of some kind. Seems there cant be a Joss show without him recently.
Pretty F*cking cool! It's like Pretender... only much better because Faith is back.
Five by five.
Aside from the terribly generic music cues (THAT'S RIGHT GARRISON, I SAID IT) this doesn't look too shabby at all.
I like this trailer, should be fun!
@Thanatos-: From the announcements, Amy Acker has a recurring role. And you just KNOW we're gonna see Adam Baldwin (Jayne) as a bad guy sometime.
Yay Fran! Hope it does well.
I can see how this will be such an awesome (hopefully) and creepy series if pulled off correctly. As long as it doesn't get dragged on way too long, it should be fine.
Looks great! But I'm afraid Fox will kill this one too.
So why isn't the pilot on BitTorrent yet?
Dear Trailer Fairy: Please bring me some Amy Acker next time. kthxbye
I'm in! You had me at bilingual badass Eliza.
Maybe the Fox people will stay asleep at the switch long enough for this one to squeak by the execs who will take one look and say, "I don't get it; it goes."
this show will be great, until Dushku establishes free will and escapes the system. and you know it will happen, at the start of season two (if they get that far), and then it will be right off the rails.
History is littered with great shows that collapsed as soon as they recklessly, inevitably, changed the concept of the show as part of the first season finale cliffhanger/second season premiere.
She's a lover, not a fighter.
But she's also a fighter, so don't get any ideas.
Is this the show being paired with 24 (meaning it will have an 8 pm slot)?
Good to see the BSG alum getting new shows. Now we wait for the new Burn Notice trailer featuring Tricia Helfer!
@zerofritz: "this show will be great, until Dushku establishes free will and escapes the system. "
But it could get pretty interesting is someone else in the group did.
Daddy likes!
It looks good, and I'm happy that it seems to have gotten a decent time slot, but I'll reserve judgment until I see an episode or two. I'll cross my fingers it rocks though!
Wow Dark Angel looks different, I mean wha? Wait just a minute.
Olivia Williams, not Olivia Dewitt
They need to do a re-cut, pronto! This promo is "spectacularly unacceptable." It feels dated, for one thing. They need to be more different than stuff past to really grab their target audience. And the dialogue needs to be much, much better. And the music sucked.
GUH!! That looks awesome!
The thrown together music and editing/fonts are because this was a rush job for the upfronts. It is not an external promotional piece. Storm Studios passed this clip along with the permission of Fox.
the cheese ball angst rawk really turns me off of this.
@Log1c: Oh please, Joss is the master of the tiny story and the long arc. Part of the problem with BSG is it's all about the long arc.
Buffy Season 5 had tonnes of small moments of significance, the whole while leading to the conclusion of the Glory arc.
Firefly was beautiful.
If anybody can pull this off, it's Joss. We'll see what happens (or not, as the case may be, because I'm TV-less) but it's going to be better than BSG.
They have BSG writers on there? First we have Eliza Dushku who has been terrible in everything she has done, and now we have writers from the worst written show on tv?
This is not looking good :(
@darcymcgee: hater.
I really can not wait. Though I am very afraid...this is still a Joss show being made by Fox...I will love it and want it to last a season at least...
Interesting note, go to the Official site and it is down with the following comment. Eep! We have a problem at the Dollhouse. We're fixing it. Tim Minear caused the problem, he's a site killer.
Secret organisation... Erased identities... Mission profiles... Scary mommy-figure. Anyone else getting flashbacks to La Femme Nikita?
I'm starting the "Give Eliza Her Nose Back" campaign.
It's Olivia Williams, not DeWitt. Man, Olivia just can't catch a break with you guys lately. :)
Reminds me of the place Molly worked before she got her implants.
Wow that actually looks pretty fun
I expect a future FOX promo for this show to carry the following tagline:
"Cancelling in 2009"
That gave me a pretty unexpected boner.
The new Fox is run by Kevin Reilly so cancellation is less likely:
Early in his career at NBC, Reilly supervised Law & Order in its first season and developed ER. After his first stint at NBC, Reilly was President of Brad Grey Television, the television production arm of Brillstein-Grey Entertainment. He joined Brillstein-Grey in 1994 and helped build the television studio into one of the most successful independent suppliers of television programming. He was responsible for shepherding some of television's top shows, such as the pilot for The Sopranos, and the NBC comedies Just Shoot Me and NewsRadio.
Before rejoining NBC in May 2004, Reilly served as President of Entertainment for FX, where he developed and launched the cable network's first original drama, The Shield. He also developed and programmed Nip/Tuck and the Denis Leary show Rescue Me for the network. [1]
At NBC, Reilly's vocal support of The Office helped it survive its low-rated first season. [2] He is credited with developing hits such as My Name Is Earl, Heroes, 30 Rock, and Friday Night Lights.[3] Despite having received a new three-year contract at NBC in February 2007, he and NBC mutually agreed to terminate the partnership in late May 2007, and Reilly departed soon after.[4]. Approximately one month later, Reilly was hired as President of Entertainment at FOX.
@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: I was wondering if I was the only one that noticed the familiar font. The show looks awesome though
FYI - there were music clearance issues so Storm studios will be providing a re-master to Dollverse/Whedonesque without the offending music later today.
It's an interesting concept, so I'm torn between watching it with the knowledge that it will inevitably become formulaic, or watching it with the knowledge that it won't last long enough on FOX to become formulaic...
Joss, please oh please give up the sucky, overused hippy typeface Papyrus. You aren't a holistic healing center, masseuse or health food store, so just put down Papyrus and pick up a fresh typeface that doesn't scream "I'm a dirty hippy."
Might I suggest some nice, newer typefaces. If you like Script faces, try Enchanted over at FontShop:
Or perhaps Nothing from MyFonts:
Heck, you could move to a class sans-serif face like Chalet:
OK, I'll get off my typeface soapbox. :-)
@sponge888: And I'll climb up on it.
Comic Sans has a bad rap; I think Papyrus should be next up for a similar universal shaming and shunning.
-- a repentant ex-Papyrus fan
Well, obviously I'm not the only one who noticed the font, but am I the only one who noticed the familiarity of some of the sets. Maybe I'm just completely Buffy/Angel obessessed, but didn't that office building look earily like Wolfram & Hart? And that Olivia person is Gwendolyn Post right? I'm not on crack? And yeah, I'll definitely watch it. Provided it isn't opposite Bones, and my husband can put up with Eliza for an hour. He really hates her for some reason.
Looks like this show might work, in an "All My Sins Remembered" way.
At least, as long as Penikett isn't given lines like "Symbols are important. They're like pieces of your heart that you can look at."
sounds a lot like Stations of the Tide by Michael Swanwick. Although their guy who got programmed up for jobs had a kind of smartass AI suitcase that went along with him. Way better than it sounds.
