Val Kilmer is going to Vancouver to shoot an eco-thriller, The Thaw. The story follows a group of students that discover an ancient parasite frozen inside a prehistoric wooly mammoth. The parasite comes back to life as the mammoth is thawed out, threatening the students and possibly spreading across the world. Actress Martha McIsaac (Superbad) will play Kilmer's daughter. More details on the parasitic monster after the jump.
Director Mark Lewis tells Dread Central that the parasitic monster was inspired by bed bugs and how vulnerable we all really are to Mother Nature. Although this an eco-thriller Lewis warns it won't get preachy at all.
Lewis also shares a little detail about the hairless monsters and how much CGI will be used.
Fortunately the aforementioned parasite doesn't have any hair, and we've partnered with a terrific VFX company. The tests have been amazing. I've never seen anything like it. It's going to be very creepy to say the least.
Shooting is starting this spring, I look forward to the mammoth thawing, but can it possibly be as great as the alien-possessed undead mammoth from the Sci Fi Channel movie? [The Province and Dread Central]

I thought George Clooney was the worst batman.
But yeah, I won't be seeing this movie.
The only virus/outbreak movie I liked was... Outbreak w/ Tommy Lee Jones.
Hmmm ... sounds like a cross between "The Thing" and "Alien."
@grecords: Agreed.
George Clooney would have been a very good Batman except for the script.. and being tied to having Robin in the movie.
The story line seems awful familiar...
...wasn't this just on the Sci-Fi channel a few Saturday nights back?
@grecords: Agreed on Clooney. I have a soft spot for the ol' Iceman.
No, the worst Batman was George Lazenby.
@grecords: He was, by his own admission. Val Kilmer's a little crazy, so he fit the role.
@jenndavo: Sound more like "The Thing" and "Mammoth" one of SciFi's better efforts, starring Summer Glau.
And this is the worst Batman
@jenndavo:
I had the same thought. Especially on "The Thing" angle.
@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: I'd never heard of "Mammoth" before this post, but DAMN, it's now on my weekend must-see list.
Whoa whoa whoa.
Val Kilmer? Worst Batman? Or Best Saint?
@jenndavo: ...not in space.
This is the worst Batman.

@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: Gonna have to disagree with you and say this is:
+ Watch video
@darcymcgee: I was talking about Alien's parasite concept more than the space setting. I imagine a few body-bursting moments in Val's movie.
@darcymcgee
The title was "Batman" not "Fatman" lol
@grecords
You must not have seen the "The Andromeda Strain", which is still my favorite outbreak/virus movie.
Why focus on the negative? Can we all at least agree that he was the best Doc Holiday?
@BadUncle:
No, the worst Batman was George Lazenby.
But he had the best Bat Girl, Diana Rigg. YUM!
@All_Thumbs: Yes I can agree with that. But I truly hated him as Batman. Val Kilmer was amazing in Kiss Kiss, Tombstone and Entourage. But a terrible Batman, I couldn't understand a word he said.
@All_Thumbs: "That's the rumor."
@WellsJohnson:
Where's Rat Pfink and Boo Boo when you need them?
So, it'll be like a whole movie about those nasty things that dropped off of Cloverfield, only more smelly for having been stuffed-up a wooly mammoth for 50,000 years...
Get a can of Raid.
Don't drop the crowbar.
Val's Batman can be forgiven by virute of him being in Willow.
But hasn't this movie been done a couple times other then The Andromeda Strain
I don't see anything about Adam West in the article.
@diverguy: batman forever had just as much robin as batman & robin.
that being said was michael keaton that great of a batman?
@Loserface: Yes. Both.
Clooney was hampered by the script and the nipple-suit, but I quite liked his Bruce Wayne, much more than Kilmer's.
@JosephFinn: He'll probably sue.
Clooney was a great Bruce Wayne, but a terrible Batman. Christian Bale is a great Batman, but a somewhat awkward Bruce Wayne (which the writers took into account and made it part of the character. yay smartness!). Keaton and Kilmer were able to mesh them both, with a little suave and a little crazy.
Adam West was the best Batman!
Let me brake the ice:
Clooney was the worst batman.
ReGenesis did a story arc about a virus being released after being collected from a frozen corpse. That was a good story, this sounds no so good...
@The Blow Leprechaun: I think Bale does pretty well at being Bruce Wayne and Batman, which is part of the reasons the new series is so compelling. Michael Keaton was good at both too. Clooney and Kilmer have opposite problems; Clooney can't be dark, insane, and mysterious to save his life. Val Kilmer made a poor Bruce Wayne, thanks in large part to not really having anything to work with in that role.
This isn't the worst Batman:

@Torley: Okay, FTW. I got nothin' to top that. Well played, sir.
The plot seems very reminiscent of "Smilla's Sense of Snow."
I liked Kilmer's BatMan.
I liked him even better in KISS KISS BANG BANG.
How could this be an non-preachy eco-thriller? That's a bit oxymoronic, n'est pas?
Bale best, Keaton good, Kilmer bad, Clooney worst, and West perfect for that type of campy show.
Kilmer was an excellent Batman. You'd think he could have never topped the classic "Top Secret"... but he did.
Val Kilmer did not kill Batman, Clooney did, and he admits it.
"eco-thriller" that's not preachy, at all?.. yeah.. right.
