The Weather Is Awesome Edition

It's Batman, Buffy, and a tripped-out Peter Parker this week! Also, S.H.I.E.L.D. goes old-school, Jonathan Ross debuts his supernatural crime drama, and Wee Hughie meets some supes who aren't total wankers. When the sun's shining like this, we crave comics!

(NOTE: The sun is shining rather resplendently on the Eastern Seaboard. I have no idea what the weather is like in Manitoba, Tajikistan, or Upper Volta. Apologies if the weather sucks in your neck of the woods.)

First off, what big events are debuting in comicdom this week? Grant Morrison's Dick Grayson and Damien Wayne road show continues in Batman and Robin 11, Geoff Johns' Superman Secret Origin 5 depicts Clark Kent's superheroic beginnings by way of sweet Gary Frank art, and Robert Kirkman's Invincible Returns one-shot is a jumping-off point for both new and old fans of Mark Grayson. But what other comics of note await readers?

- S.H.I.E.L.D. 1 - The secret history of S.H.I.E.L.D. starring the great minds of yore. I want an Immortal Man cameo! Wait, wrong publisher!

- Demo 3 - Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan's young-people-being-sexy-and-strange series returns.
- Marvel Zombies 5 1 - This franchise has evolved from a series starring Marvel's A-listers to a C-Movie creature feature starring Machine Man and Morbius. Mind you, this ain't a bad thing.
- The Boys 41 - Hughie investigates Super Duper, the remedial superteam with a heart of gold. On a totally unrelated note, this song pops in my head whenever I see this comic on the stands.
- Sweet Tooth 8 - Jeff Lemire's post-apocalyptic mutant fable has been getting consistently rave reviews.
- Buffy The Vampire Slayer 34 - Rumor has it this issue is slightly NSFW. We can do NSFW.
- Authority 21 - Did you know io9 Features Editor Marc Bernadin co-writes this title? Now you know!
- GI Joe Origins 14 - A Ripcord-centric issue.
- Turf 1 - Jonathan Ross is penning this - it's being plenty hyped and could be worth a peep.
- Phillip K. Dick's Electric Ant 1 - Marvel takes on a PKD robot tale.
- HATE Annual 8 - Peter Bagge doing his thing. Once a year. Yup!

As for hardcovers, we have Christo Gage's trepanation-happy crime book Area 10 and a hardcover release of the beginning of Morrison's Batman and Robin run (Batman and Robin, Vol. 1: Batman Reborn).

What's my PICK OF THE WEEK? Brendan McCarthy's Spider-Man: Fever. It's Mr. Man-Spider, grooving out with Steve-O Strange in some occult dimension that's more Lidsville than Dormammu. Check out some Ditko-esque art from the issue here. It's like the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth have been listening to a lot of Iron Butterfly.

That's all for this week! Quit your job and head to your favorite municipal greenspace, stat!
