Kevin Bacon in talks to play X-Men villain, but which one?

Reports are swirling that Kevin Bacon, the affable center of the Hollywood universe, is in talks to play a baddie in X-Men: First Class. But which enemy of the X-Men will Bacon portray? We have some ideas.

Deadline's report says Kevin Bacon "has the offer and is negotiating to play the villain role in X-Men: First Class." I'm putting the emphasis on "the" there because it implies he will be playing the main bad guy in the movie, which seemingly narrows down the list of possible characters to relatively major X-Men villains. His age is another limiting factor - at 52, he's practically twice the age of anyone else in the movie, including James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, who are playing Professor X and Magneto respectively.

So who will he play? Well, all we officially know about the movie is that it takes place at a time when Xavier and Magneto "were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known... In the process, a rift between them opened." So one would think that the villain will be someone who is either A) incredibly powerful or B) capable of unleashing something very powerful. And he's the sort of villain who would force the the Professor and Magneto to confront their sharply different views about humans and mutants.

It's difficult coming up with a character who readily fits those requirements (although we welcome your suggestions). It's particularly tricky coming up with one that would make sense for Kevin Bacon to play. If the filmmakers want him for his work as an amoral scientist in The Hollow Man, maybe they have him in mind for Sentinels inventor Steven Lang, or mutant-enslaving geneticist David Moreau. If it's the vigilante chops he showed in Death Sentence, it could be mutant hunter Carl Denti, who uses (world-threatening?) alien technology in his quest to kill all the mutants. If they liked the barely concealed psychosis behind the charming exterior he displayed in The River Wild, then perhaps it's mutant-hating activist Graydon Creed.

These are all just wild guesses, of course, and are likely completely wrong - just knowing what Kevin Bacon has had the most success playing lately, I'd guess he's in line to play some sort of corrupt general or sleazy politician. Either way, if the rumors are true and Bacon does indeed join the film, my once-waning interest in X-Men: First Class has been completely restored.
