We all know that Daft Punk's composed the soundtrack to Tron Legacy. But did you know that in 2003, the band teamed up with Toei Animation to create an intergalactic odyssey about alien pop bands? Witness Interstella 5555.

Sunday Matinee: Daft Punk's anime space opera, Interstella 5555S

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem is a dialog-less film set to the group's 2001 album, Discovery (you know, the album with "One More Time," the song they play at every senior prom/fist-pumping nightclub/Arbor Day Party ever). The band teamed up with Space Battleship Yamato pioneer and Captain Harlock creator Leiji Matsumoto to make a 60-minute film about a blue-skinned alien pop band who is abducted from their home planet by a demonic svengali, Earl de Darkwood. Earl brainwashes the extraterrestrials into think they're a human band called The Crescendolls and proceeds to exploit the band until they collapse of exhaustion. Luckily, Shep, an alien pilot, has followed the band to Earth and works in the shadows to upend the Earl's scheme.

This film is a no-brainer for Daft Punk fans and aficionados of retro anime — it's got house beats, gleaming visuals, and a story filled with heroic sacrifice, heartfelt moments, and cherubic aliens dancing in place. It's also great for house parties — just project it on a wall, and you have a premixed soundtrack and lightshow. Plus, the wordless plot's easy enough to follow if you're only somewhat paying attention. Click below to watch.
