Once upon a time, the Beatles wanted to star in a Stanley Kubrick-directed Lord of the Rings movie. Art blog Super Punch is holding a contest that imagines how this alt-history flick might have looked.

John Struan of Super Punch explains the history behind his art contest:

Once upon a time, The Beatles were interested in starring in a live-action version of The Lord of the Rings with Paul McCartney as Frodo Baggins, Ringo Starr as Sam Gamgee, George Harrison as Gandalf, and John Lennon as Gollum. They asked Stanley Kubrick to direct, but he declined (according to Wikipedia), or Tolkien killed the idea (according to Peter Jackson).

So Struan has invited folks to create concept art, movie posters, toys, or whatever else they can think of for this movie that never was. Here are a few of the entries (the contest is open until tomorrow), and you can see the rest over at Super Punch.
