The X-Men movies seem to be delving further and further into their own past — first a Wolverine prequel, and now an origin story for Professor X and Magneto. But sequels to X-Men: The Last Stand are still coming.
At least, producer Lauren Shuler Donner told Empire Magazine that sequels are still "in active development." She's quoted in the magazine's latest issue as saying: "We took the treatment to Fox and they love it… And X4 leads into X5."
Of course, there's a huge difference between a script being in development, and a film actually getting made. Reading between the lines, it sounds like there's just a treatment for X4 so far, and chances are nobody's even been hired to write the thing yet.
At a guess, whether the next X-Men film is a sequel to The Last Stand or to X-Men: First Class probably depends on how well First Class does this summer — personally, I'm hoping for another prequel, this time set in the 1970s. All-New, All-Different X-Men, anyone?
