Zack Snyder has finally cast the villain for his upcoming Man of Steel. Is it Toyman? Metallo? Doomsday? Atomic Skull? Composite Superman? The Galactic Golem?
Sadly, none of the above — Revolutionary Road and Boardwalk Empire actor Michael Shannon will portray the evil Kryptonian General Zod (and I had a sawbuck riding on the Composite Superman). Said Snyder via a Warner Bros. press release:
Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.
As you're well aware, Terence Stamp famously portrayed the kneel-happy Zod in Superman 2. With Zod locked in, does this mean we'll be getting his lackeys Ursa and Non? And more importantly, does this mean we'll be getting a cellophane shield showdown?
Side Note: The press release also noted that the film's official title is now simply Man of Steel, which makes it sound like that workout VHS I once saw through the cowboy doors at my local video store.
