Wednesday gives us a sneak peek at Frank Miller's 300 prequel...and Marijuanaman!

Just in time for 4/20, Ziggy Marley's THC-themed superhero drops by comic stores to trick crooks into thinking they're dying (so they'll call 911 on themselves). Plus, new Peter Bagge and a metric bongload of new graphic novels!

First Issues

The most promising new comic this week is the return Dark Horse Presents. The latest installment of this 80-page comic-and-prose anthology includes new work from such luminaries as Harlan Ellison, Carla Speed McNeil, and Howard Chaykin, the return of Paul Chadwick's rocky everyman Concrete, and a first look at Frank Miller's prequel to 300, Xerxes.

As for the rest of the grab bag, IDW is releasing Matt Sturges' Doctor Who: A Fairytale Life (a four-issue miniseries about Amy Pond trapped in a medieval fantasyland) and the Infestation sequel Zombies vs Robots: Undercity (check out our preview here).

And in the "screamingly high concept" column, we have the Image series '68 (zombies + the Vietnam War) and Super Dinosaur (The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman + a thunder lizard).

From Marvel, there's the miniseries Halo: Fall Of Reach - Covenant and the Fear Itself: Sins Past one-shot (which reprints the crazy 1980s origin of Sin, Red Skull's daughter/newly minted Fear Itself villain).

Other Releases

A particular noteworthy release this week is Peter Bagge's ninth Hate Annual, the idiosyncratic cartoonist's yearly angst-a-thon in which average schmoes freak out over day-to-day living.

As for fantasy titles, Fables continues with its storybook analysis of superheroes in the "Super Team" arc, and Kill Shakespeare approaches its conclusion (read our preview here). And superhero readers can keep their eyes peeled for a new issue of Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man and Rick Remender's gonzo X-Men espionage title Uncanny X-Force.

Graphic Novels

There's a whole slew of interesting bookshelf material hitting the stands. In no particular order...

The ??? Category: Remember how I said Image was going high concept this week? On 4/20, the publisher's releasing Ziggy Marley's new graphic novel Marijuanaman. You can read our extensive interview with Marley about the superhero here. After checking out Marijuanaman, pick up a copy of the old-school D&D reprint collection Dungeons & Dragons Classics Volume 1 and blast some Deep Purple. Gelatinous cube, brah.

Superheroes: Marvel's Captain America vs Red Skull cherry-picks stories of these dueling nemeses from throughout the decades. S.H.I.E.L.D. - Architects Of Forever collects Jonathan Hickman's 2010 miniseries all in one place. For Kurt Busiek fans, we have Thunderbolts Classic Volume 1 (about the 1990s' foremost villains turned heroes turned villains turned heroes) and the Astro City: Shining Stars hardcover.

Britannia: For 2000 AD fans there are the third volumes of both Judge Dredd: Complete Case Files and Judge Dredd: Mega-City Masters. Additionally, there are three reprinted volumes of Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett's original Tank Girl tales.

As usual, here's the list of everything being released to comic stores tomorrow, and you can find your nearest comic retailer here. Happy reading, gang!
