Observatory's twin lasers beam into space

The W.M. Keck Observatory switched on both its adaptive optics lasers last month, creating the amazing spectacle of two powerful lasers firing into space simultaneously.

If you were lucky enough to be in Mauna Kea, Hawai'i, this was the sight you'd have seen. The Keck 1 laser finally received the upgrade it needed to allow enough power to be transmitted from the laser to the telescope. And now you can witness the power of this fully operational space laser, which will allow Keck to compensate for turbulence in the atmosphere.
