Wednesday brings us mature-readers comics...in spaaace!

This week's comic bounty includes a groovy scifi compilation from Vertigo, a sentient grappling tooth, a Jack Kirby tribute project, and an artifact Brian K. Vaughan's tenure penning everyone's favorite mutant shapeshifter (no, I don't mean Morph).

First Issues

First off, DC is releasing their new science fiction anthology Strange Adventures this week, which features creators like Jeff Lemire writing Ultra the freaking Multi-Alien and the debut of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's super-grimy NASA-project-gone-awry comic Spaceman. It's pretty awesome seeing Vertigo do such an unabashedly eclectic scifi title, and hopefully we'll see more installments in the future.

You can check out our exclusive preview of Paul Cornell's Strange Adventures story here. Also, that Paul Pope cover is all sorts of ace.

Other firsts out this week include IDW's new Cobra series, Avatar's sure-to-be-gruesome Caligula miniseries from David Lapham, and issue #0 of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross's love letter to Jack Kirby's lost characters, Kirby: Genesis.

Other Releases

Marvel's releasing a new-readers-friendly .1 issue Daken: Dark Wolverine, and Dark Horse has the final issue of Star Wars: Legacy — War. There's also new issues of Detective Comics, American Vampire, Walking Dead, Astonishing Spider-Man/Wolverine, FF, and Incorruptible.

Also, we recently previewed new issues of Xombi and Suicide Girls for your perusal.

Graphic Novels

An awesome graphic novel coming out this week is Oni Press' The Tooth, a cheeky throwback to old 1970s monster comics. I'll be talking about it later today, so keep your eyes peeled. (UPDATE: Oni just told us the shipping date was kicked back to June 1 due to shipping shenanigans. Next week it is!)

Another title worth noting is Brian K. Vaughan's entire Mystique series is collected. It's an interesting lil' time capsule from a bygone era (2003) before the author became widely renowned for Y: The Last Man, Runaways, and Ex Machina.

Other graphic novels that might strike your fancy include the first volume of Ultimate Comics: Captain America, Michael McMillian's (a.k.a. Reverend Steve from True Blood) magical secret agent series Lucid, Pat Mills' 2000 AD barbarian title Slaine: Lord Of Misrule, and the second volume of American Vampire.

As usual, here's the list of everything being released to comic stores tomorrow, and you can find your nearest comic retailer here. Happy reading, gang!
