This week in comics, alternate reality Batman is extremely annoyed

This week's comic haul brings new issues of Marvel and DC's big summer events, a new Hellboy miniseries from Dark Horse, and an unfamiliar, cheesed-off Caped Crusader who's more Punisher than Adam West.

First Issues

A few Flashpoint tie-in miniseries are out this week. I'm particularly jazzed for Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's Batman: Knight Of Vengeance (the 100 Bullets creative team+ crazy alternate timeline Batman) and Peter Milligan penning Secret Seven (Milligan + Shade the Changing Man). The Abin Sur: The Green Lantern and World of Flashpoint tie-ins are also out.

Some other promising firsts include a new volume of Jonathan Hickman's Marvel miniseries S.H.I.E.L.D. (which pits Da Vinci versus Isaac Newton), the return of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' acclaimed pulp mini Criminal: Last of the Innocent, and Mike Mignola's Hellboy: The Fury.

Other debuts in the grab bag are the Milestone Comics throwback one-shot Static Shock Special, the Frank Cho-penned space opera 50 Girls 50, Ron Marz's vampire samurai comic Shinku, Peter David's Dark Tower: Gunslinger - Battle Of Tull, Scott Lobdell's reboot of the mermaid comic Fathom, and the first issue of Reed Gunther (a bear-riding cowboy battles a giant snake).

Other Releases

DC and Marvel get all dueling banjos this week with the latest installments of their big summer series. The second issue of Flashpoint and the third installment of Fear Itself are out. Alternate dimension Flash versus evil Norse gods...which strikes your fancy?

Other new issues on the stand include Secret Six, iZombie, Sweet Tooth, 30 Days Of Night: Night Again, Turf, Irredeemable, and The Boys. Marvel is also releasing a new-readers-friendly .1 issue of Avengers Academy.

Graphic Novels

Cullen Bunn, Shawn Lee, and Matt Kindt's Oni Press graphic novel The Tooth is out today. We reviewed it last week (and thought it was the bee's knees). Another intriguing book out this week is Celluloid, an erotic graphic novel from Sandman artist and Cages author Dave McKean.

Additionally, the final volume of Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 8 ("The Last Gleaming") is out in trade paperback, and Mario & Gilbert Hernandez's science fiction graphic novel Citizen Rex and Warren Ellis' Planetary/Batman are out on hardcover. El Torres' Suicide Forest and Kelly Sue DeConnick's Osborn: Evil Incorporated are collected Wednesday as well.

As usual, here's the list of everything being released to comic stores tomorrow, and you can find your nearest comic retailer here. Happy reading, gang!
