Over the next few months, nerd visionary Ariel Waldman is helping organize the global geekfest known as Science Hack Day — where a bunch of people get together for two days of collaborative mad science (this video is about one of the very first Hack Days, which was a tech-oriented event sponsored by Yahoo and the BBC in England). Want to join in? There could be a Science Hack Day in your city! Waldman writes in to io9 to say:

Science Hack Day is a 48-hour-all-night event that brings together designers, developers, scientists and other geeks in the same physical space for a brief but intense period of collaboration, hacking, and building 'cool stuff'. Hacks from previous events have included things like the Particle Wind Chime that takes data from particle collisions and maps it to sounds to create an augmented diagnostic tool for accelerator laboratories to lamps that light up each time an asteroid passes close to the Earth.

Recently, Science Hack Day received a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to launch the event into a global initiative, encouraging people around the world to organize Science Hack Days

We'll now be able to select 10 people from around the world who are interested in organizing a Science Hack Day to win a trip to San Francisco to attend the upcoming Science Hack Day in November (the deadline to apply is August 31).

Want to plan your own Science Hack Day, or enter to come out to San Francisco's Science Hack Day? Find out more about it on the Science Hack Day site. Remember, the deadline is coming up soon, so get the beakers bubbling and start your robot minions on that big project idea!
