The delightful John Hodgman is certainly having a lot of fun with the public and our obsession with Ghostbusters 3 — but have his latest comments secretly revealed a few plot points in the long-awaited Ghostbusters sequel?
Update: It was just a joke.
On the latest episode of "The Best Show" on WFMU, Tom Scharpling and John Hodgman talked a great deal about Ghostbusters 3. And Hodgman revealed that he's currently doing some "secret errands" for Dan Aykroyd — and heavily implied his involvement in the film.
Later on, after a fun conversation about real-life ghosts, Hodgman polled the audience about his hypothetical predicament:
If you were hypothetically offered a role in Ghostbusters 3... would you take the role? Let's say you're [playing] sort of the dissolute son of Egon, the Harold Ramis character, and you're kind of like John Candy in Splash, you're kind of a mess. But it turns out you're a natural ghost-whisperer, a natural psychic. But here's the thing: Bill Murray's not going to be in this movie, and probably not happy that you are. But you get to be in a major role, in a major movie and one of the greatest franchises of all time. Would you do it?
Did Hodgman just reveal the character profile of Egon's son, plus the main reason as to why this movie has been swimming in development purgatory for a very long time? Is the young blood of Hollywood afraid of making waves with Murray?
Keep in mind that this isn't the first time Hodgman has been tied to G3, in fact in March of 2010 both he and Patton Oswalt stated that they wouldn't participate in a third Ghostbusters film, but maybe things have changed since then.
And to add more confusion fuel to the fire later on Hodgeman Tweeted that "Tom @Scharpling will be in Dan Aykroyd's Ghostbusters 3 as Harold Ramis's deadbeat son, who is also a ghost whisperer." Scharpling is the host of "The Best Show," and we're pretty sure it's all tongue-in-cheek from this point on.
So what do you think it all means? Was Hodgman just joking in general, or is there really a "deadbeat ghost-whisperer son of Harold Ramis" character in this film?
UPDATE: Hodgman took to twitter to set the record straight:
ANSWER THREE: I AM NOT APPEARING IN GHOSTBUSTERS 3. Nor is @scharpling. That was a radio #fakecastingnews joke.
I apologize to my friends at @io9 and @TheAVClub for the confusion.
So I guess we have our answer — nope. Which makes us a bit sad. But on the other hand, John Hodgman just called us friends.
