This week's comics bring dysfunctional X-Men and unexpected weirdness

This week, the X-Men choose sides, Rage Against the Machine's guitarist pens a mutant dystopia, and teenage superheroes go on nicotine benders. It's Comics We Crave, massaging your temples over the internet.

First Issues

One of the most promising debuts this week goes to the new Vertigo horror compilation The Unexpected. We've been digging the publisher's anthology initiative that began with the scifi book Strange Adventures, and The Unexpected boasts work from such creators as Dave Gibbons, Brian Wood, and Jill Thompson.

Two other titles that have piqued our interest are Kieron Gillen's X-Men Regenesis — which sees the mutants picking sides in the wake of Schism — and Tom Morello's post-apocalyptic series Orchid. Check out our interview with Morello about this $1 comic here.

On the Marvel side of things, there's the Peter David-penned John Carter: World of Mars (which ties into the upcoming movie) and Legion Of Monsters (which sees Elsa Bloodstone teaming up with Morbius and Werewolf by Night). And on the DC side of the aisle, there's two New 52 miniseries: My Greatest Adventure (selling point: an appearance by the new Robotman) and James Robinson's Shade.

Grab Bag

DC is releasing a reprint of the 1800s Elseworlds story JLA: Age Of Wonder. Also, here are some books that we've recently previewed or discussed with their creators: Demon Knights, Batwoman, and Infestation: Outbreak.

Other titles that may tickle your fancy include Greg Rucka's Punisher, Jason Aaron's Punisher MAX, Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 9, Dollhouse: Epitaphs, American Vampire: Survival Of The Fittest, The Unwritten, Frankenstein Agent Of S.H.A.D.E., Morning Glories, Joe Hill's The Cape , FF, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, and S.H.I.E.L.D.

Graphic Novels

Of particular note this week is the hardcover reprinting of Daniel Clowes' The Death-Ray, a coming-of-age story about a teenager who gains super-strength when he smokes cigarettes. Unfortunately, he makes for a crappy superhero and an even worse supervillain. Check out our recent interview with Clowes about it here.

Also, Vertigo is releasing the first 100 Bullets hardcover omnibus. For Jason Aaron fans, there's an omnibus of his early Wolverine stories and the third volume of Punisher MAX.

As usual, here's the list of everything being released to comic stores tomorrow, and you can find your nearest comic retailer here. Happy reading, gang!
