Astonishingly Lovely Illustrations from the 1949 Alice in Wonderland Edition

Most of us have probably seen the mind-blowing Tenniel illustrations of Alice in Wonderland — but have you seen these lush, brilliantly colored illustrations by Leonard Weisgard, from the 1949 edition? This was only the second ever illustrated edition of Alice, and it carves out an identity all its own.

As Maria Popova writes over at Brain Pickings:

The vibrant, textured artwork exudes a certain mid-century boldness that makes it as much a timeless celebration of the beloved children's book as it is a time-capsule of bygone aesthetic from the golden age of illustration and graphic design.

Here are some of our favorites among these illustrations. Check out more at the link. [Vintage Kid's Books My Kid Loves and Brain Pickings]
