Back in August, the earth-shatteringly important topic that is Beyoncé's baby bump broke the world record for the most tweets per second (TPS). The singer's pregnancy reveal accrued a stunning 8,868 TPS.
Now, Japanese Twitter users have broken that record during last weekend's annual airing of Hayao Miyazaki's 1986 animated classic Laputa: Castle in The Sky. Spoilers for a 25-year-old film ahead!
In this absolutely lovely film, the heroic Princess Sheeta is forced to cast the Spell of Destruction to prevent the villainous Muska from harnessing the flying city of Laputa. Rather than let Laputa fall into wicked hands, Sheeta and her friend Pazu say the magic word — "Balse!" — to thwart the bad guy. At this critical juncture in the film, Castle in the Sky racked up a gobsmacking (UPDATED) 25,088 TPS. Many of these tweets were from viewers typing the incantation in unison with the young protagonists. So in a nutshell, Princess Sheeta whispered "Balse!" and Twitter went insane. Commence tittering like 12-year-olds. Damn, I just gave you more ammunition.
