Adventure Time's Marceline gets her own comic spin-off

Now that comic-consuming audiences have been wolfing down the print awesomeness of Adventure Time's Jake and Finn, it's time for Marceline to get her own comic book. And the further adventures of the vampire rocker girl will be written and illustrated by a webcomics superstar.

Boom! Studios has announced that Marceline the Vampire Queen is getting her own title, Adventure Time: Marceline And The Scream Queens. The comic, which comes out in July, is being written and drawn by Meredith Gran, creator of the webcomic Octopus Pie. Gran's involvement adds another layer of geek-out for me; I adore Octopus Pie, which always strikes me as a perfect grown-up version of a Nick Toon. Gran's background is in animation, and that education touches every panel of her artwork. I'm looking forward to see what she does with Marceline, although I hope we don't lose too much Octopus Pie in the process.

Here's what we can expect from the first issue:

Thanks to a newfound interest in music, Princess Bubblegum joins Marceline's paranormal rock band for a tour across the land of Ooo! But when they're threatened by everything from scenesters to beasts born of self-doubt, can they make it to the RADDEST GIG EVER in time?!

The rest of the comic's lineup is also nothing to sneeze at: Jen Wang of the book Koko Be Good (which also has some amazing animation-influenced artwork) is doing a backup story, and there will be variant covers by Chynna Clugston, Lucy Knisley, Ming Doyle and Colleen Coover.
