Check out this stunning video of yesterday's transit of Venus. It shows our sister planet's entire 7-hour journey across the face of the Sun in just 39 seconds. The video, which was produced by the Solar Dynamics Observatory, features multiple views of the once-in-a-lifetime event. And as if it couldn't get any better, the Sun was kind enough to show us some beautiful coronal loops.
This particular space-based perspective was produced at the 171 Angstrom wavelength, which is why the detail is so vivid. This channel is also especially good at showing coronal loops - the arcs extending off of the Sun where plasma moves along magnetic field lines. The brightest spots in the video are locations where the magnetic field near the surface is exceptionally strong.
The SDO has also provided higher quality downloadable videos that don't suffer from YouTube's compression schemes.
Not to be outdone, the European Space Agency has released their version of the transit. This video was captured by SWAP, a Belgian solar imager that's onboard the ESA's PROBA-2 microsatellite. Be sure to watch the small flaring activity in the bright active region in the northern solar hemisphere as Venus passes over. And towards the end, watch carefully for the coronal mass ejection which appears as a dim inverted U-shape moving away from the Sun towards the bottom-right.
