I'm willing to bet that most people reading this would be willing to go through their mother telling them, "I'm disappointed in you," or "I don't love you anymore," as long as they don't have to hear her say, "I'm having hot sex." That's what Leela has to hear, over and over, in this episode.
In Zapp Dingbat, the show finally gets around to showing how the sewer mutants, who are finally allowed to go to the surface, react to their liberation. Almost none of them are interested in leaving the sewer, but Munda, Leela's mom, wants to finally pursue her dream career in the study of alien languages. When Morris, Leela's dad, gets too dismissive at their anniversary party, they get divorced and Munda goes off into the galaxy.
Morris spends most of the episode going after his own dream of surfing the great sewer waves of the world, which leads to a few good visuals and the word "leprechaunorrhea," which I now have in my search history, because I didn't know how to spell it. Munda, meanwhile, finds a place where she's needed — on Zapp Brannigan's ship, The Nimbus, as an official translator. She's also needed as Zapp's new lady of the moment. Leela objects to this, and so brings down upon herself some of the most awful sentences ever to come out of a mother's mouth. "Why can't you just be happy for me! After all these years, I'm going places I've never been! And having sex there!"
There's also about sixteen repetitions of the phrase, "Sex with Zapp," and Zapp himself gets in a cringe-worthy line when Leela tries to seduce him away from her mom and he asks, "Leela? Does your mother know you're using her pole?" Leela, terminal interferer that she is, tries to meddle her parents back together the entire episode. But, in the end, it's always going to be Zapp who screws up Zapp's life, and parent-love wins out.
This is not a classically great episode, like Decision 3012 a couple of weeks ago, but it's good solid fun, and it has a lot of great lines and at least one great visual. While waiting up for her mother to come home from a date with Zapp, Leela sits reading. The book? Love Stories About Dinosaurs. If anyone wants to write that, I will buy it. I think we all will.
