Neill Blomkamp's Next Movie: A Robot Comedy?

You don't think of District 9 director Neill Blomkamp as a comedy mastermind — unless you have a really unusual sense of humor. But he was telling people at Comic Con that after the dystopian film Elysium, his next project is probably a science fiction comedy called Chappie, which he cowrote with his District 9 collaborator Terri Tatchell.

In some interviews, Blomkamp described Chappie as being about "a really ridiculous robot." And he told The Playlist:

It's like a fundamentally more simple story, a comedy, a heartfelt story, in a science fiction setting. And it's fucking hilarious, it's a really cool film. I can say that with confidence... It's a smaller film, a more esoteric one.

Blomkamp added that he has a couple other ideas, for a horror movie or another comedy, but they're less fully formed — so Chappie will probably be his next movie. But he'll want to take a bit of time off after Elysium, before committing to anything. In any case, a weird, esoteric robot comedy sounds perfectly lovely.
