On its surface, Gumdrop is a rather straightforward short about a robot actress having her screen test for a movie with a big-name star. But Gumdrop herself is filled with buckets of wonderful nervous energy, and the short contains some surprising animated sequences, including ones in which our robot ingénue is digitally inserted into old movies with Charlie Chaplin and Fred Astaire.

Gumdrop was written and co-directed by Kerry Conran (creator and director of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow), along with Avatar, The Avengers, and Iron Man 2 visual effects director Stephen Lawes. The old movie sequences are quite wonderful, as is the mysterious and seductive Tik-Tok. But it leaves us with one question: do robots in the world of Gumdrop get their own version of hallucinogens, or can they take the same drugs everyone else does?
