"The ship stood inside itself and looked out through blue fabricated eyes." It's one of my favorite short-story openings in ages. Damon Shaw's "A Little Thing" is just one of two new stories up at Canada's science fiction magazine, AE. More »

 M. Night Shyamalan's next project has a very interesting title, One Thousand A.E. - we're going on a limb here and guessing that A.E. means After Earth. Could this apocalyptic film help M. We reported back in May on attempts to launch a new Canadian professional science fiction webzine called AE, after A.E. Van Vogt. The magazine was trying to raise money via Kickstarter, but met with tragedy when its biggest donor turned out to be non-existent. The good news is, AE is launching after all, putting out its first issue later this month. And it's soliciting content from Canadian writers and illustrators, paying 6 cents (Canadian) per word — later, the magazine will also be open to international contributors. There's also an art contest seeking the best illustration of the Black Destroyer from Van Vogt's story of the same name. So Canadians, go to it! We all rejoiced when a new Canadian science fiction magazine, AE, raised more than its $10,000 goal through the Kickstarter fundraising platform. A new magazine paying SFWA pro rates isn't to be sneezed at. The Ridley Scott/Tony Scott-produced Andromeda Strain miniseries got a new trailer and an airdate: Memorial Day weekend. The new trailer includes a few snippets of cast interviews, but also shows more of the tense showdown between Benjamin Bratt and Andre Braugher over the impossibility of stopping the fast-mutating alien virus and saving the human race. And you glimpse more of the crazy over-the-top action sequences, including a fighter jet pilot getting struck down. I only hope that weird "ribbit" sound effect isn't in the actual movie. The original classic of plague lit, Michael Crichton's Andromeda Strain, is getting a classy remake as an A&E miniseries. Produced by Ridley and Tony Scott, the new Andromeda looks like it'll bring all of the intensity, and grit of the novel, but with more of an action-movie spin. Best of all, it'll sacrifice none of the original's intelligence and attention to detail. Watch the trailer and then click through to learn more, including spoilers for those of you who somehow missed the classic original. <a href="http://io9.com/369535/alien-plague-eats-town-in-ridley-scotts-andromeda" title="Click here to read more about Alien Plague Eats Town, In Ridley Scott's "Andromeda"">More »
