Welcome to the new, green Arctic

This image is based on satellite observations of the Arctic region over a 30 year period, starting in 1982. What it reveals, according to NOAA, is that the icy area around the north pole is getting greener. In the future, plants will thrive in former ice fields.

The image shows changes in surface vegetation over the 30 year period, with the greenest areas showing the greatest amount of new growth. Red is for areas that have actually stayed the same or lost vegetation. This is a glimpse of where our planet is headed.
