With an ugly dispute over her work that finally concluded in the Tennessee Court of Appeals this week, that fate was probably ensured. Norton's caretaker Sue Stewart won her appeal against Texas oncologist Victor Horadam, returning the science fiction and fantasy legend's rights to her control after a lower court ruling. Good news: the battle over Andre Norton's legacy has finally been settled, and that means her unpublished books will soon be coming out. A lower court in Tennessee gave Norton's biggest fan Victor Horadam control over her works, including royalties. But an appeal court overturned the ruling, giving Norton's inheritance to longtime caretaker Sue Stewart. Says Stewart, "I appreciate the fans' patience. You may soon get to read some unpublished works by science fiction grandmaster Andre Norton, author of Star Born, Star Ka'at, The Cross Roads Of Time and many other SF novels. Since Norton died in 2005, her will has been tied up in court, with her caretaker and her biggest fan both claiming the rights to her posthumous publications. If you grew up reading Andre Norton's 1970s YA fiction like Star Ka'at, then you'll want to cast back further into history and check out some of the novels from her Time Traders series, many of which are free online. Today, the resourceful nerds at BoingBoing linked to the third book in the Cold War series that pits time-traveling Soviets against time-traveling U.S. spies. The third book, The Defiant Agents, is about how a group of Apache natives colonize space (yay for getting to be the colonizers this time around?), but the first book (Time Traders) sets the scene by giving us a 1950s-style temporal arms race between the commies and the capitalist pigdogs. Recently, we talked about animal uplift stories, where non-human creatures gain human-like intelligence. Well, there's a subclass of that genre: the smart cat book. Every kid goes through a cat phase, and there's no shortage of scifi books that pander to this obsession. There are cat familiars, the Kzin of Larry Niven's universe, and clans of warrior cats like those in the Warriors series. But for the best scifi cat wondrousness, combined with gritty, realistic setting, you can't beat Star Ka'at by Andre Norton and Dorothy Madlee. I think I wore a hole in that book when I was a kid, dreaming of powerful, psychic cats coming to Earth to rescue me. And this mid-70s book holds up over time. More »
