Want to support indie publishing in the age of book mega-corporations? Of course you do, especially if that means you'll get more edgy horror, philosophical science fiction, and unusual books you'd never see if every publishing imprint were owned by the same company. That's why we're excited that indie publisher Apex Book Company, creators of Apex Magazine (disclosure: they've published one of my stories), has just landed a major distribution deal in the U.S. and U.K. with Diamond Book Distributors. Now they are trying to raise $5000 through Peerbacker so they can ramp up production with larger print runs. This is a one-time expense, to help the company shift from a small print run model to larger print runs that will get sold through Diamond. More »

Joyce Carol Oates' story about twin brothers caused some consternation, because the "demon" brother is identified as a conservative politician. So when should authors leave their politics out of a story? Apex's Michael A. Burstein has a well-thought-out response. More »

Who wouldn't want the responsibility of deciding what kind of science fiction filth feeds the hungry minds of today's youth? That's what I want to know. Apex Book Company - which claims to be the place "Where Science Fiction And Horror Collide" - is looking for two brave souls to sort through submissions for their online SF anthology title Apex Digest Online, reading and offering commentary on at least 20 SF short stories per week. "[E]xpect to find stories that make your eyeballs bleed," they warn, but they don't say whether that's a good thing or not. [Editor Wanted (Via)] More »
