Our genes don't just help determine who we are — they also preserve an incredibly ancient record of who our ancestors were. Our genomes can actually reveal human population sizes dating all the way back to before humans even existed. More »

We can trace our evolutionary heritage back millions of years, but it's surprisingly tricky to say with certainty which hominid species came directly before us. Now it looks like one of our evolutionary cousins is actually our parent species. More »

James Cameron spent years creating Avatar's floating islands and crazy dragons, and then an army of concept artists brought them to life. But maybe they had some inspiration from somewhere else? Like classic album-cover artist Roger Dean? Behold the evidence. <a href="http://io9.com/5426120/did-prog-rocks-greatest-artist-inspire-avatar-all-signs-point-to-yes/gallery/" title="Click here to read more about Did Prog Rock's Greatest Artist Inspire Avatar? The new trailer for Malaysian superhero action-comedy Cicakman 2 is online, and it's pretty great. The film-makers downplayed the film's comedy elements in favor of more action and better special effects this time around, and I'm cautiously excited. As we mentioned a while back, Cicakman 2 played at the Pusan International Film Festival in Korea, and it's set to open December 11. Watch the trailer below, and then learn more about what the gecko-themed hero unexpectedly has in common with James Bond. More »

This gigantic tool is an ore-grinding machine at the Kumtore gold mine, the largest in Central Asia. The mine clings to the side of the Tien Shien mountain range, 4200 meters above sea level in Issyk Kul Province, Kyrgyzstan.
