For the first time in ages, Publishers Weekly's list of the year's top 10 books (of any genre) includes a science fiction title, Maureen McHugh's new story collection After the Apocalypse. Over at Genreville, PW's Rose Fox lists her top SF/fantasy books of the year, including McHugh's — and all six of them are from small presses. Also notable: three out of six are short story collections rather than novels. Chances are, you haven't read all (or any) of these titles yet, so this is a great chance to add to your "to read" list. The verdict is in, and we watched it happen. The World Fantasy Awards at yesterday's World Fantasy Convention in San Diego were a star-studded celebration of fantasy writers, publishers and readers. Connie Willis riffed and joked about her love of Starbucks and the TV show Primeval, Neil Gaiman talked about the importance of the fantasy community, and Peter S. The Locus Awards announced their 2011 finalists, and the slate is pretty similar to the Hugo Awards finalists — except noticeably a bit less female-dominated. In particular, the "best novel" nominees are the same except that Mira Grant and N.K. Jemisin are replaced by William Gibson and Iain M. Banks.
Print magazines bounce back in 2010 Nebula Award Nominees list

We've been noticing for a while now that anthologies of original fiction and electronic magazines have been edging out print magazines for award nominations, but this year's Nebula Awards shortlist sees a bit of a reversal of that trend. Asimov's, Analog and Realms of Fantasy all did quite well. Also, the "Best Novel" nominees include only one dude, which is a nice change after a few years of dude-heavy nominees lists. More »

The Philip K. Dick Award, for science fiction books originally published in paperback instead of hardcover, put out its shortlist for the year, and chances are a few books on the list haven't been on your radar. (The list does include Project Itoh's Harmony, which was one of our favorite books of 2010.) Since these books are all out in paperback, they're pretty inexpensive, and they all sound pretty intriguing.
Viking-Alien Saga Bound For Valhalla As The Year's Best Science Fiction Movie?

Scrappy indie movie Outlander satisfied our need for cool aliens as well as our love for viking glory and swordfights. And now it's up for "Best Science Fiction Movie" in Spike's Scream Awards. Also in the running: Duncan Jones' justly acclaimed Moon. The other contenders are all big studio productions like Star Trek, Transformers 2, Terminator 4 and Knowing. So it's nice to see a couple smaller movies making the ballot — and especially one that slid under the radar, like Outlander. More »

Last night, the 2009 Hugo Awards Ceremony brought together many of the genre's leading lights, and we were there. A few victories surprised us, and a couple of speeches moved us. Here's our gallery of the parties and the glamor. More »
