So now we know that NBC is paying attention to all the complaints about the direction of Heroes, and has fired two of the show's co-executive producers in response. Now they're rumored to be considering bringing in Pushing Daisies' Bryan Fuller to replace them. But what changes - if any - will the loss of Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander bring to the superhero soap? And are they the right changes to save the show from itself? More »

After Jaime Somers quit fighting international naughtiness as the Bionic Woman, she got her PhD and became a therapist to other secret agents, according to the last ever Bionic TV movie Bionic Ever After. (Which, as you might guess, sees the Six Million Dollar Man marrying the Bionic Woman.) And yeesh, she's a really really bad therapist. I love the way she sort of rolls her eyes when her patient talks about being emotionally scarred by the horrors she's witnessed, and then sighs, "What do you want me to do about it?" In a later scene, Jaime's back with that same patient, and has a "bionic earache" to get out of it. More »

If you couldn't get enough of Romo Lampkin, the Blues Brothers-esque attorney who saved Gaius Baltar and hallucinated about his dead cat on Battlestar Galactica, then rejoice! Actor Mark Sheppard is playing the villainous Manservant Neville in the last two episodes of The Middleman season one, and he's also set to appear in multiple episodes of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse. Sheppard is a scifi stalwart, having played the shifty Badger in Firefly, the shifty Anthros in Bionic Woman, and (probably shifty) characters in Star Trek: Voyager, Jake 2.0 and the awesome M.A.N.T.I.S. [IMDB and Dollverse, thanks Thom!] <a href="http://io9.com/5038439/its-a-romo-lampkin-universe-we-just-visit-it" title="Click here to read more about It's A Romo Lampkin Universe! In 1977, I was a snotty 16-year-old who had just discovered punk rock. Keeping up with the latest 45s left little time for TV, and anyway, I’m sure I looked down my nose at anything as “silly” as The Bionic Woman. And toys associated with that show? Not cool at all. Well, I was wrong about that, because now I want, want, want this awesome fembot doll—if for no other reason than to let her kick B****e’s perfect plastic ass. True, the pneumatically built fembot has to turn into a “Mystery Lady” every once in a while, but how many opportunities did little girls have, then or now, to role play with a hard-fighting agent of evil? Such a refreshing break from the usual fashion model or mommy. Even bionic woman Jaime Sommers was a good girl, after all. More »

Surprising no-one, television analysts are predicting that JJ Abrams' new Fox show Fringe will be the breakout hit of this year's new fall TV shows, but apparently NBC's Knight Rider revival won't fare so well. There's also an unexpected show being named as the third most-likely-to-succeed series coming in September, especially considering the trouble that it's currently in. Find out what everyone thinks you'll be watching in just a few months under the jump. More »

After you've saved the world from robotic face-changing spies, there's really only one place to go to relax: The Bionic Beauty Salon. Or the Bionic Repair Station. At least, that's what kids in the mid-70s believed thanks to Kenner's range of Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman toys reinforced both the excitement of "bionic action" and wonders of gender stereotyping. More »

Battlestar Galactica may have been more of a critical hit than a ratings smash, but its producers are getting ready to spread its science fiction recipe, mixing grit and soap opera, through a bunch of more high-profile venues. David Eick is already signed to work on a TV series based on P.D. James' Children Of Men, and Ron Moore is writing a prequel to The Thing and a TV movie called Virtuality. And they're both working on the BSG prequel TV movie Caprica, and might be involved in a resulting series. But now, it turns out both creators will be much, much busier than that. More »

It's the news that I didn't mention for a day because I wanted to believe that it was all just an April Fools' hoax: NBC has picked up the recent reboot of Knight Rider as a regular series for its 2008-2009 season. The network, which will now be known as the "No, we didn't learn anything from Bionic Woman, thanks, why did you ask? Channel," hopes that the show will draw viewers in on Friday nights, but it's not banking on it, according to NBC co-chairman Marc Graboff. More »

David Eick's TV version of P.D. James' novel Children of Men sounds as though it'll use its dark future without children to explore some fascinating themes. In a world where you don't have any responsibility to the next generation, what behavior is too extreme? His weekly drama will look at how society changes when people stop believing humanity will continue as a species. All of which does sound fascinating, and worth exploring in a TV show even after a high-profile movie. But of course, Eick talked up some great thematic ideas about his now-cancelled Bionic Woman show too. So keep your fingers firmly crossed. We're still sad that we'll never get to see Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman movie. After all, he's created some of the most memorable science fiction universes, including the space-western Firefly and his forthcoming programmable-amnesiac show Dollhouse. We'd still like to see Joss put his auteur-mojo to work on someone else's universe. Which longstanding science fiction universe would you most love to see Joss writing, directing and composing the theme song for? More »

Why is science fiction so much hotter at the movies than on television? People have wondered for a while. Recently, the universally panned Jumper and the blah I Am Legend and Cloverfield have hit big. But the well-received Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is on the brink of cancellation. We explain this strange phenomenon, after the jump. More »

Here's a catchy compilation of theme tunes from the late 70s and early 80s, featuring Shaft-esque guitars and stomping drum-beats. It's amazing how every science fiction TV show from a particular era features a similar-sounding opening theme tune. And the trends in theme music say something about the shows of the eras they belong to. Science fiction fans are like the bacteria in your stomach: most of the time, they help to keep you healthy. But when the pH balance goes wrong, and the bacteria start running the show, they can make you sick. We've expressed our view that Star Trek deserves euthanasia partly because it inevitably caters too much to its obsessive fanbase. Here's a list of examples of too-powerful fans hastening the death of a franchise. More »

Now that the strike is almost certainly over, Battlestar Galactica could be back in production as soon as March, according to a handy checklist posted by TV Guide's Michael Ausiello. Lost may be able to shoot as many as six extra episodes this season, and Smallville could have five more. But (brace yourself) Chuck won't be back until the fall, and Bionic Woman is looking increasingly cancelled. The most exciting thing on television this week is either a Mustang with the voice of Val Kilmer, or a small town in Kansas recovering from a nuclear holocaust. Whether you're more thrilled about the Knight Rider TV movie or the return of Jericho probably reveals something very deep about you, but we'll let you decide what. Other reasons to set your DVR or VCR this week include some crazy supernova action, and new Sarah Connor, Lost and Smallville episodes. Optimism is a wonderful thing, but too much of it begins to look like, well, like this:
Bionic Woman fell victim to sub-standard writing, but remains a show littered with potential, especially in terms of the caliber of actors on board and the premise - which I still believe is awesome.
Yes, Bionic Woman fans are beginning to come to terms with what was wrong with the show, only a couple of months after it's been off the air. I say "beginning," because defending the caliber of acting? Sarah Connor uses a motorcycle as a projectile weapon in this great set piece from last night's Sarah Connor Chronicles. Compare that with this lame motorcycle-fu clip from the last Bionic Woman, where the whole sequence is just a set-up for a dumb PMS joke. It's a good reminder that even though Sarah Connor once again sobs about her impending nervous breakdown, Connor is still a million times better than the alternative. More reasons why after the jump. More »

It's semi-official. NBC has pulled the plug on Bionic Woman. In totally unrelated news, NBC is having to repay tons of money to advertisers because its fall ratings were so disappointing. Just over a week ago at a Battlestar Galactica fan convention in Burbank, Katee "Starbuck" Sackhoff did a little over-sharing. According to LiveJournal user Roadrunner, she fired a few salvos at Bionic Woman, saying she wouldn't be back on the show even if it returned post-strike. Then she dissed the show and its low ratings a few times. Cue the internet snowball effect. USA Today picked up the story and ran with it, and now Katee is running damage control today on TV Guide, saying "It's sad because you want to connect with the fans, and then they throw it in your face in a negative light." Yeah, we're totally sad. More »

Speculation runs rampant that tonight's episode, the last in the can before the writer's strike, will also be the last ever for the troubled Bionic Woman. As the show opens, Jaime and the Berkut gang are down at the corner tavern holding an old-fashioned wake for Antonio. "I slept with him once. It was amazing," says Ruth, apres de a bunch of booze. Well. Apparently she's NOT gay, thus ending another bit of internet hypothesizing as well as a potentially interesting storyline. More »

More details on the Knight Rider TV movie have leaked out. The TV movie revolves around a secret organization that sounds exactly like the Berkut Group from Bionic Woman. The Knight Foundation (named after Michael Knight, David Hasselhoff's character on the original show) has a super vague mission: correcting the mistakes of covert military contractors. To this end, they — you guessed it — create a super-smart car. Okay, so you knew this was probably going to suck. The only question is, why will it suck? And how could it have sucked less? More »
