In order to detect explosive chemicals, without getting in range, scientists have developed a testing laser. The difference is, this laser doesn't need to be shot out of a device. It's shot out of the air. More »

"It's a lot nicer if you don't have to walk up to a bomb to find out what it is," quips Larry Senesac of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. I would have to agree: roadside bombs are clearly no fun for anyone. That's why Senesac and his fellow researchers have developed a laser system that can detect bombs from a distance of up to 100 meters. And that's not all — they say their special laser gun could also guard against food poisoning. <a href="http://io9.com/5023186/scared-of-bombs-just-use-your-ray-gun" title="Click here to read more about Scared of Bombs? If you're worried about the environment but still need to blow people up, a new class of nitrogen-based bomb materials is for you. Popular explosives like TNT and HMX react to form nitrogen oxides when detonated, the major culprits behind smog and acid rain. This is a big no-no if you're the type of warmonger who drives a hybrid tank, obviously, so weapons experts at the University of Munich devised an alternatives that are cleaner, more stable, and even more powerful than those other explosives. More »
