If you thought the discofied Buck Rogers show and movies like Star Crash were ridiculously over-the-top examples of disco space opera, then you haven't seen Escape From Galaxy 3. Is escapism the enemy of smart science fiction? Are stories that let us escape reality always inconsequential fluff? That's what people argue — but the reverse is true. Just in time for your gift-buying frenzy, comics publishers are putting out some brainwarping space opera tales — mostly in a classy hardcover format. This week, Marvel is reprinting two storylines that follow up the Annihilation saga, of invasion from beyond our universe. Another new hardcover collects two years of classic Buck Rogers strips. And DC wants to take you back to when the Legion of Superheroes was still great. These are just some of the new comics that we're craving this week. <a href="http://io9.com/5105117/space-opera-rules-this-weeks-comics-and-batmans-still-gone" title="Click here to read more about Space Opera Rules This Week's Comics. This year sees the 80th birthday of time-traveling American hero Buck Rogers, the comic strip and movie serial hero who also made the 25th century both a weekly destination and strangely sexy for a generation of children in the early 1980s (Okay, that last part may have had a lot to do with Erin Gray's Wilma Deering for a lot of viewers, I admit). Unlike most octogenarians, Buck's future is looking bright (There's a new comic and new movie both on the way), but we have to admit - we'd rather he stayed in the Old Folks Home and let someone new take his place. More »

We may know him as someone who lives in a pineapple under the sea, but that doesn't mean that Spongebob Squarepants can't try out a new home every now and again - say, perhaps, in outer space? Cartooning genius Roger Langridge has been clearing out his virtual cupboard and has uncovered this little-seen official Spongebob strip that sees the character re-created as space hero Spongebuck Blasterpants. We're seeing a whole new franchise possibility here, people. More »

Hey, remember when we were told that Frank Miller was definitely not directing a new Buck Rogers movie? Looks like Flint Dille, one of the producers of the movie, was a little bit hasty when saying that Miller wasn't involved. The 25th Century may very soon be filled with futuristic femme fatales and unconvincing CGI backdrops. More »

Comics auteur-turned-director Frank Miller is just putting the finishing touches on his movie version of Will Eisner's The Spirit, but he's already looking ahead. Producer Deborah Del Prete told Collider she's working with Miller on revamping a "classic scifi hero." But it's too soon to say which one. Flash Gordon? Buck Rogers? Dan Dare? I'm intrigued by the idea of a Miller pulp scifi movie, since I loved The Big Guy And Rusty The Boy Robot, and his futuristic Martha Washington stories at least started well. Meanwhile, Del Prete also says she's talking to Orson Scott Card about doing an Ender's Game movie, which was still in the hands of Chartoff Productions last we heard. [Collider] More »

You're always hearing about Flash Gordon this and Buck Rogers that. You see Flash and Buck, snorting their comet-dust and dancing with robots with obscenely shaped heads. But nobody ever thinks about Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, who rocked just as hard back in the 1950s. Did Buck have a comedy sidekick named Winky? Or a sassy navigator named Vena, in go-go boots? Or zig-zag lightning braid on his jacket-cuffs? Here's a clip where Rocky and Winky deal with some sabotage of the Space Affairs Agency. You'll never guess who the saboteur is! More »

Say goodbye to your hopes for a dark Sin City style Buck Rogers: Frank Miller is definitely not directing the Buck movie, says Flint Dille, the movie's producer and author of a Buck Rogers graphic novel. This follows on the heels of statements from Nu Image/Millennium Films that "they are still mulling over director contenders." But Dille left the door open for Miller to be involved in the film somehow: "Frank and I are friends, and we'll continue to meddle in each other's projects." More »

Everyone's favorite angst-ridden teen aliens will be back on the internet, thanks to The WB. Fans can stream all of Roswell's old episodes from the WB's new website, which is set to launch in August of 2008. Too long have we gone with out the Royal Four of Antar. Science fiction shows are burning up the internet these days: BSG, Firefly, At The Earth's Core, Surface, Land Of The Giants, Buck Rogers and Lost in Space are among the most popular shows on online video site Hulu. It's only a matter of time until more teen scifi such as The Secret World Of Alex Mack join in on the streaming fun. [Syfy Portal] More »

Buck Rogers faced the same problem that vexed Gilligan, the Professor, and the Skipper. Except instead of "Mary Ann or Ginger?" it was "Wilma or Ardala?" You have to admit, that's a pretty tough choice. Especially since both women are tough, calculating, skilled, and in powerful positions. We all know Buck preferred Colonel Wilma Deering (who outranked him), but there were plenty of scenes where he looked ready to "biddi biddi biddi" with Princess Ardala. Which do you think he should have dated? Examine the evidence and sound off in today's thawed-out triviagasm. More »

Wall-E may be the cutest lil robot ever to hit our screens, but he's also the latest in a long line. It seems like wherever you go in scifi, you have to step over a cute chirpy little bot, who whistles, or tweets out a little catchphrase — including R2D2 from Star Wars, Twiki from Buck Rogers and K-9 from Doctor Who. The cute-robot trend may have taken off in the late 70s, but it really began with 1972's Silent Running, as you can see from the clip above. Click through to find out how Bruce Dern's little robot friends changed science fiction forever. More »

It looks like the U.S. Navy was able to pull off a real-life game of missile command last night, and successfully shot down our ailing superspy satellite while everyone was busy gawping at the lunar eclipse. Hey, that's exactly how the script for the failed reboot of Buck Rogers began... does that mean we just sent a frozen astronaut into deep orbit somewhere? Strangely, the military lackey in this video doesn't address that issue. More »
