After successfully putting a scale model TARDIS (with lights!) on top of a building at MIT, the CalTech pranksters behind the caper took their show on the road. In this video, they reveal how they set up the giant structure on top of a UC Berkeley building (it's hard to tell for sure, but I think it's LeConte Hall or maybe Birge?). I hope this encourages more geek pranks at my beloved alma mater. <a href="http://io9.com/5800867/how-to-you-put-a-scale-model-of-the-tardis-on-top-of-a-building-caltech-pranksters-reveal-all" title="Click here to read more about How do you put a scale model of the TARDIS on top of a building? The North American Nebula is a flattering portrait of the NAFTA countries, floating in space. But when the Spitzer Space Telescope generated infrared images of it, that stately American land mass was replaced by raw chaos — which tells us something more about the stages of stellar development. More »

This week, scientists at Caltech released the first ever multi-input, "plug-and-play" synthetic RNA devices. You may have heard of Boolean logic gates in computer science, but now synthetic biologists are taking them one step further, creating organic computer programs that control the activity inside your cells. Maung Nyan Win and Christina D. Smolke have formed and tested in vivo one such system — and they say it's ready to work in mammals. More »

Earlier this week we reported on the magnetic anomaly map of the world, and now there is evidence of a more pressing concern: carbon dioxide. Don't believe me? Consult the details of a recent collaboration between NASA and Caltech - Carbon dioxide rides about the world on warm atmospheric belts to threaten the ones you love. If you have any decency you'll click through and assuage the damage with us. More »
