The fossils were lost, and nobody even knew it. For ages, a stockpile of over 300 specimens — including several collected by Charles Darwin on his historic Voyage of the Beagle — has been changing hands throughout England, hidden away inside a nondescript cabinet. More »

Inbreeding is where cousins and other close relatives have children together. Most cultures have strong taboos against it, primarily because of the increased risk of birth defects. Here's why that risk isn't all it's cracked up to be. More »

When it comes to old academic societies, there isn't an organization on Earth that can hold a candle to Britain's Royal Society. Charles Darwin once speculated that the use of stone tools by our ancient ancestors had profoundly influenced the evolution of our hands. Now, 140 years later, we've discovered that, once again, Darwin knew exactly what he was talking about. More »

Nearly two centuries ago, famed scientists Charles Darwin and Joseph Hooker transformed the barren volcanic island of Ascension into a lush artificial ecosystem, unwittingly inventing terraforming. Now, Darwin's incredible achievement could help us transform Mars into a livable environment. More »

Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany are cast as married couple in Jon Amiel's biopic Creation about the life of Charles Darwin. Bettany will won't be donning much of the evolutionary theorist's mighty beard, because this picture promises to show us the life of a young Darwin, and his struggles. THR claims, "The scientist finds himself caught in a struggle between faith and reason, love and truth." I'm all for anything that shows "crazy" Darwin hot rodding around town smoking cigarettes and chasing skirts. But what kind of man was he in his youth, was he a Spicoli, a Bueller or a Dean, and can he out do the Kinsey movie? The film version of Alan Moore's graphic novel The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is probably the worst movie adaptation of all time. It failed to capture the spirit of the graphic novel, didn't stay true to the characters, and devolved into just another vehicle for Sean Connery. But take heart. Check out this trailer for Tarsem Singh's The Fall, which is everything League could have been. The flick has been playing all over the world, and will finally be coming to the U.S. in March. More »
