It's official: Steven Spielberg will direct the movie version of Robopocalypse. Expect big, wide-screen, tentpole robot-revolution action, coming sometime in 2013. And there are the first details on Daniel H. Wilson's next book after Robopocalypse. According to Deadline, Spielberg is officially on board to direct Robopocalypse, with a script by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods.) Spielberg was so excited about this project that he started the ball rolling when the novel wasn't even finished — as Wilson was finishing book pages, Goddard was turning them into script pages and the movie was being storyboarded and designed on the go. Now the book is finished — it comes out next June — and Spielberg will start shooting in January 2012. In the meantime, Spielberg is in post-production on his Tin Tin movie, plus War Horse, both of which will be out in December 2011. More »

Click to view You may have noticed that the trailer for the new Star Trek movie has a monster in it that looks suspiciously like the space cousin of Clovie from Cloverfield. No surprise there, since JJ Abrams produced Cloverfield and is director of Star Trek. But are they separated at birth or just vaguely similar? We break it down for you. One of the main characteristics of Clovie was his dangly leg action, with those giant freaky backwards joints propelling him everywhere. Star Trek monster, known familiarly as Trekmon, has bizarre legs that appear to have joints over its head. Trekmon's mouth is also remarkably similar to Clovie's. It has both the vertical shape and spike-shaped teeth that made Clovie's chompers so dorky-dangerous. Not only do we find legular and mouthular similarities between the two kaiju, but they also share a pallor. Both have hairless skin that looks sort of pale and pinkish. I think Trekmon is pretty much Clovie's galactic relative. Of course, when Trekmon opens its mega-mouth, it looks a bit more like Hostie from The Host. Thanks, Avery "Master Kaiju Wrangler" Guerra! It's on the far back burner, says director Matt Reeves: "We're still kind of toying with what it's going to be and whether or not we're going to find something that will be as exciting for us to make and, hopefully, for an audience to watch. We're freaking doomed, according to a new documentary coming in September from ABC News. 2100 will look at the next century, which could be "the last century of our civilization," thanks to global warming, food and fuel shortages, population explosion and general apocalyptic mania. But ABC's super-depressing documentary also has a fun side — you get to create your own dystopian home movies, which may be featured as part of the show. The sample they showed on Good Morning America today looks incredibly Cloverfield-esque, which is a Good Thing. Look closely and you can see crooked-legged monster/aliens running about on (what appears to be) the sea floor.
