A mission to Mars could launch as early as the 2030s, taking a small crew of humans on a 5-year round trip to the red planet. One of the biggest questions about this mission isn't what kind of rocket ship we'll need, but how we'll feed people for five years in vacuum, and on an alien world. NASA senior research scientist Maya R. Cooper told attendees at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in Denver that the 5-year round-trip mission to Mars would require 7,000 pounds of food per person. And she's made a list of what kinds of food they'll be eating. <a href="http://io9.com/5833808/what-will-the-first-martian-settlers-eat-one-scientist-has-the-answer" title="Click here to read more about What will the first humans on Mars eat? Humanity is eventually going to go to the moon again, and we're bringing nuclear technology with us! NASA has long been working on the problem of electricity on the moon, and the newest possible solution is a portable nuclear reactor. More »

Aerospace experts from NASA to MIT claim that finding the amount of energy and time we'd need to cross the huge distances involved is out of the realm of possibility. In a recent article, Wired Magazine's Robert Lemos suggested that the JPC's frustrating findings meant humans would never reach the stars. But don't add "space adventure" to your list of unlikely futures for the human species just yet — here are four reasons why. More »
