Jonas hasn't had the easiest eighth grade year. He just lost his mother in a house fire. His father won't tell him which high school he'll be going to. And he spends most of his time doodling and daydreaming when he should be doing schoolwork. But his talent for imagination may come in handy when he finds himself on a journey through a magic mirror. More »

When an older woman becomes pregnant, there are always a lot of concerns. Will the baby be born healthy? Will the labor be difficult? In Ryan Andrews' short and sweet webcomic Sarah and the Seed, a woman's pregnancy results in something her husband never thought to worry about: a giant seed. More »

Even in post-apocalyptic world where men can transform into human resources bears and brain slugs can edit out disturbing memories, you can't escape the mindfuck that is office politics. In the webcomic adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer's darkly comic story The Situation, a lowly fish designer is thrust into a world of traitorous brain-linking coworkers and steampunk automaton managers who just want his love. More »

If young adult novels teach us anything, it's that the fated hero who battles back evil will be a child with a pure heart. Given that those meddling kids are always thwarting their plans for world domination, wouldn't it be easier if those would-be world conquerors loaded the dice of fate and ensured that someone less than worthy got the mark of destiny? Maybe an adult who care more about models and bottles than the wonders of magic? More »

If he could, would Hugh Hefner upload his consciousness into the Playboy Mansion, and live out the rest of eternity as the pleasure palace of his own creation? In Tom Walker's webcomic, SS Myra, the wealthy hedonist Myra does just that — except her pleasure palace is her spaceship, a spacefaring wonderland filled with talking sex toys and spunk-eating plants. In the early 1980s, way before he was famous for absolutely anything, Alan Moore was tapped to pen a series of science fiction strips for the now-venerable British comic mag 2000 AD. Dubbed Future Shocks, these 2000 AD staples were one-and-done stories with diabolical twist endings and a quirky cast of aliens, time travelers, and ill-mannered mutants. More »

Let's tier these suckers — comics will be judged on quality, overall accessibility, and whether or not I fell asleep midway through reading. More »

Last Wednesday, DC's fired off its first salvo of relaunched first issues. Of the thirteen rebooted books, some worked, a bunch didn't, and one debut absolutely knocked it out of the park. That comic was Jeff Lemire's and Travel Foreman's superhero-horror yarn Animal Man. <a href="http://io9.com/5839089/whos-the-big-winner-of-dcs-relaunch-so-far-animal-man" title="Click here to read more about Who's the big winner of DC's relaunch so far? Brian Ralph's graphic novel Daybreak takes a phenomenological approach to survivalist horror. Like the participant in a pick-a-path novel, the reader is abruptly plopped down in the middle of a garbage-strewn hellhole. More »

Kagan McLeod's new graphic novel Infinite Kung Fu seemingly occupies the nexus of every martial arts film ever made. There are hyper-stylized wuxia techniques, unbeatable Shaolin monks (and their giant training robots), and a town out of a 1970s blaxploitation flick anachronistically plopped down in an ancient China overrun by the walking dead. More »

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century - 1969 sees Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's Britannic literary superteam in Love Generation London, where Aleister Crowley analogue Oliver Haddo conspires with Terner Purple, a thinly veiled reference to Mick Jagger's role in the rock-and-roll drama Performance. More »

SVK is the latest comic collaboration by Warren Ellis and artist Matt "D'Israeli" Brooker, who previously worked together on the cyberpunkish Lazarus Churchyard. This one-shot comic has been gaining press for a totally unabashed gimmick: it comes packaged with a handheld UV light device that allows the reader to discover hidden dialogue bubbles rendered in invisible ink. More »

Lucid, an urban fantasy miniseries from writer Michael McMillian (True Blood) and editor Zachary Quinto, is an enjoyable yarn about a covert agency of magicians employed by Uncle Sam. Lucid contains some savvy worldbuilding, but its generic protagonist isn't that magical. More »

I recently perused the Absolute editions of Warren Ellis' seminal shared universe comic series Planetary all in one sitting. And you know what? For as much as Ellis loves penning curmudgeons, the series is a panacea for doom'n'gloom superheroics. More »
