I think that this problem has become worse in comics, the reason for which is obvious. The comic companies think of the individual issues as ads for the eventual "graphic novel" (in a total bastardization of the term). They're shooting themselves in the foot, however, because by doing this they're scaring away the casual reader, in effect saying "DO NOT ENTER IF YOU HAVEN'T READ 10 YEARS OF CONTINUITY" (continuity which, btw, will be made irrelevant by future arcs).
