It's not just social media, though -- dorky, geeky, and nerdy stuff has gotten cooler in the last twenty years.
Which is why now I am learning about football. Because fuck all y'all in-crowd zombie lovers. Reply

@Josh Wimmer: Well, I think that part of the reason that it's gotten cooler--and I think it's been faster in the last ten years than it has in the last twenty--is because of how easily geek groups are able to network with each other; it makes us a relevant, peer-reinforced demographic, rather than a scattering of unconsidered outliers.

@Chris Braak: Well, obviously, that's part of it, and maybe a bigger part than I'm giving it credit for. But there's also just been a blurring of arbitrary demarcations that the mainstream used to abide by more stringently. I don't know that it's coincidence that the whole Free to Be... You and Me crowd, which we are part of, came of age around the time that people realized it was OK to like dragons and spaceships, but also exercise and talking to girls.

@Josh Wimmer: Yes, you are not giving my theory enough credit, which is why you disagree with me. IT IS A PROBLEM FROM WHICH YOU OFTEN SUFFER.
Seriously, though, yeah, a lot of things play into it. But I maintain that a huge part is the way the internet has permitted fringe groups to coalesce. Reply
