Pet Fashion Peeve:
A guy can't buy clothing for his gurl because there is no conversion table between men's and women's sizes (outside of S,M,L).
From youth, guy's clothes are about actual, physical measurements (eg.,pants 32x30, shirts 16x32).
No femme has ever been able to explain to me the difference between misses and petite sizes (or why they are even broken out that way) or the arcane numbers used (She's a size 8).
Is this a part of the 'feminine mystique'?

@lazyeight: Okay, dear: Petite sizes are for short women. As for the sizes... yeah, we don't understand those either. Reply

@lazyeight: You could always ask your lady what size she is. Reply

@crashedpc: Not at all, I buy my lady clothes all the time and she gave me a nice long list of her sizes before I went shopping. Open communication and exchange of information is key in any good relationship. Reply

@Grrsn Dn: Good point. Still hard to make sense of all them weird numbers though. I've been shopping wit da ladies enough times to know that I just accept them for what they are. Reply

@Grrsn Dn: My gf told me she wanted me to get her a new brown belt for Christmas, then decided it would be a bad idea because I would just end up calling her fat. Her words exactly. Reply

@Gann: Well, maybe "Merry fuckin Christmas Fat-ass" isn't the best holiday greeting when you exchange gifts. But far be it from me to tell me how to treat your lady. Reply

@RocktheDebit: More specifically, "Misses" are clothing for teens and young adults. It's not just about size, but they will have a certain more youthful style.

"Petites" are more like the regular women's line (so more businessy and grown-up casual), but tailored differently. They're not just uniformly smaller, but will usually have shorter sleeves and legs in proportion to the rest of the garment. I'm short (5'1") and should be a perfect petites customer, but I like my sleeves long and while regular pant legs are way too long for me, petites are almost always lamely ankle-flashingly short.

I hope that clears things up.

And the other thing about women's sizes is that, since they're not based on concrete measurements, they're also wildly inconsistent. So your 8-size lady friend could probably wear 6s, 8s, 10s, Ms, and Ls, and probably all sorts of other things besides... Reply

@Grrsn Dn: That explains quite a bit. Gotta go get that engraving changed... Reply

@bluewyvern: That last paragraph sums up the real issue with women's clothing. Those numbers and sizes are meaningless.

Couple that with the fact that women both tend to wear tighter clothes than men and tend to have much more variable sizes than men do (your hormonal periods seem awfully inconvenient, honestly, and you should really look into the relatively innocuous periods that men have instead), there's no guarantee that any given garment will even approach being the right size.

In general, I think it's not really worth the hassle to buy clothes for someone else. People can choose their own clothes, I'll find something else to gift. Reply

@Balius: Well mens' sizes only have a passing resemblance to what the purport to represent. depending on the designer my pants size can vary wildly. just because the tag in the pants reads 32" doesn't mean your waist is actually 32" around. Reply
