The book was one of those large coffee table numbers with lots of big flashy pictures about strange planes. It's been too many years to remember it exactly but it went something like,

"Anyone skilled enough to fly one of these knows better not to."

(crossing fingers)

Only two more years until Windows 7.

RayCeeYa commented on NVIDIA Responsible for Nearly 30% of Vista Crashes in 2007 I get the feeling that it's not the buggy nature of the video card or the buggy nature of the OS (although they certainly contribute) but the third x factor that isn't shown in that graph.

But what's the market share comparison between Nvidia, ATI and the other video card manufacturers. Also what about gaming companies releasing video games to the market without proper testing and debugging?

I hold all the software companies to blame, including Microsoft. They're so hung up on making as much money as possible that they aren't finishing the job.

RayCeeYa commented on Eight of the Oddest Inspirations for the Coolest Science Fiction Machines If they're talking about cityscapes how could they forget Edwin G. Burrows' Gotham series. Burrows created a series of concept art for futuristic cities. His work has inspired Sci-Fi Cities from Metropolis to Star Wars to it's most popular namesake, Gotham City in the Batman Universe.

It's a beautifully dark urban environment with multilayered buildings, skyways, elevated trains and airship docks.

His work has been posted online by the University that's currently holding it. Truly some awesome stuff.

RayCeeYa commented on Porcupine, The Weaponized Flashlight: Blinding, Slashing, Worrying I've got no idea who'd carry this creepy thing around: I guess you'd have to be pretty scared indeed if something like this in your bag made you feel safer. But, if you're really into personal protection it's available for $129.

You're missing the point. This is the perfect gift for your girlfriend/wife/significant other to show them you care.

RayCeeYa commented on Hardcore Data Recovery: Double Boil Your Drive? I gotta say that if it came down to it and I didn't have anything too important on there why not boil your hard drive?

The worst that could happen is that the drive that doesn't work anyway could be rendered completely worthless.

But I sure as hell wouldn't trust it to keep working for any length of time after boiling.

RayCeeYa commented on JetPack Uses Water, Not Fire, To Kill You In a JetPacking Accident The trick here is you don't carry any water with you in the air. The pack is being supplied from a pump on the ground. Or water as he has it planned out. A hose runs up to the pack with high pressure water and the pack simply points it down. I think it would work, but you're still attached to the ground by the hose.

RayCeeYa commented on 1000 Foot Wi-Fi Range Sounds Delicious, Probably Tastes Like Crap This reminds me of some of the home made directional wi-fi antennas. The most classic is the "cantenna", a directional antenna made out of a pair of tin cans. Then a lot of people have been able to get miles of range using modified Primestar or DirectTV dishes.

RayCeeYa commented on Fat Lamp has a Disgusting Glow "High quality filtered animal fats don't go rancid that quickly anyway - especially if they're in a sealed container like that."

Actually you're wrong there, fats can even break down and go rancid in the absence of oxygen. Heat is actually the critical factor in rancidity of fats. Trust me I have a dual degree in chemistry and food science.

RayCeeYa commented on Fire-Safe Cigarettes to Keep Idiots Alive a Bit Longer Until the 20th century tobacco was typically inconsistently dried, that is some was wetter than other. This wetter and drier tobacco would often come from the same batch so they were re-blended to try and homogenize the batch. As a result, the hand rolled cigarettes of the period would go out if they weren't smoked (smoking draws air into the burning coal on the end of the cigarette) for a period of time.

If you wish to sample a modern day analogue, find a tobacco seller that sells fresh pipe tobacco and roll your own cigarettes. They don't stay lit for more than a minute or two on their own. Of course results may very depending on supplier, product and local climate.
