Can Google’s new conference really save the world?

Google already most likely controls your email, your personal calendar and your web searches, but can the internet giant also create a conference that comes up with real solutions to the world's problems? Google just launched a new conference, Solve for X, which will bring together experts to discuss "radical technology ideas for solving global problems." The new video above mentions cancer and global climate change — because why start small?

The conference apparently goes along with Google's Google X Lab, which is developing new technologies like driver-less cars. And Google's Richard DeVaul wrote on his Google+ page that the first conference already happened last weekend, with talks on "transforming education, 5x improvements in agriculture through better decision support, synthetic biology and carbon-negative biofuels." The talks should all be up on Youtube later today.

So what are the chances that anything useful will come of this? I guess we'll find out. [via VentureBeat]
