Sandman

According to the latest reports, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is finalizing the previously rumored deal to produce a Sandman movie at Warner Bros. with David S. Goyer. It's also been rumored that, in the same vein as his recent Don Jon project, Gordon-Levitt is looking to direct and star in the adaptation. No writer has yet been hired, but at the same time Warner Bros. is feeling more confident that they've "cracked" the storyline for this film after years of trying. Sandman would be a much bigger directorial vehicle than Don Jon, but Warner Bors. is said to be bullish on Gordon-Levitt after Inception and The Dark Knight Rises. [Deadline]

Avatar

Following the announcement that the sequels will all be filmed in New Zealand, James Cameron spoke to the Associated Press and revealed a few details about the look of them:

It's going to be a lot of new imagery and a lot of new environments and creatures across Pandora. We're blowing it out all over the place. At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary. I mean the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasy land that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it.

That seems to indicate that the films will all be Pandora-centric, but Cameron cleared up the rumors that the next film would be an all-underwater affair:

There's a fair bit of underwater stuff. It's been inaccurately said that the second film takes place underwater. That's not true. There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films.

So, if it's all about Pandora, what'll make the sequels that different from the original? According to Cameron, they'll be straying away from continuing Jake's personal story. Instead, he says, think of The Godfather films. Yes. You read that right. The Godfather:

It was very Jake-centric. His story seen through his eyes. We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward. It's really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like 'The Godfather.'

Who's ready for an all-Pandora, not all-underwater, Godfather-with-blue-aliens trilogy of movies? [Coming Soon]
