Crowdfund A Musical Fantasy Web Series And A Play About Jack Kirby

Want to see a web series set in a land where singing controls magic? How about a play about the life of Jack Kirby, an audiobook of Catherine Asaro's short stories, a series of science fiction romance comics, or the weirdest puppet show ever to grace the Internet? They're all looking for a little crowdfunding help.

There are some big and worthy crowdfunding campaigns going on this week, including one to fund more Reading Rainbow and another to support a Hollywood Science Fiction Museum.

Here are a few more campaigns that you may have missed:

Muzzled the Musical

In the land of Serenadia, singing is a magical ability and the right song can have miraculous effects—or disastrous consequences:

Hence, the Golden King has decreed all Blackhearts must bear the Muzzle: a magic tattoo that punishes those who try to sing.

See, the Kingdom was once ravaged by years of bloody musical warfare waged between the Golden King and the Black Matron. Now, twenty years after the King's dulcet baritone restored peace to the land, the Matron's teen daughter Malfalia is determined to shed her Muzzle and sing. So Malf sneaks off to meet her idol, Princess Ambrosia... only for Ambrosia to cruelly trick her into triggering her Muzzle and, quite satisfied, leave her screaming on the cold Kingdom asphalt.

But Malfalia - even writhing, heartbroken and humiliated - is still her mother's daughter. She sings through the pain, shatters her Muzzle and vows revenge: to masquerade as a princess, infiltrate and destroy royal society... then free her fellow Blackhearts from the tyranny of the Muzzles!

This musical, magical web series will star Ashly Burch (Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin?) and Ashley Clements (The Lizzie Bennet Diaries), with appearances from Hercules' Kevin Sorbo, Buffy and Angel's Juliet Landau, and The Guild's Jeff Lewis. For a $25 pledge, the team is offering backers the Season One soundtrack as well as access to the series' production diaries.

King Kirby, a play by Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente

Comics writer Fred Van Lente teams up with his wife, playwright Crystal Skillman, to bring the story of legendary cartoonist Jack Kirby to the stage. The debut performance will happen at the 2014 Comic Book Theater Festival at New York City's The Brick Theater this June. For a $20 pledge, backers can receive an illustrated PDF of the script.

Aurora in Four Voices

Catherine Asaro's anthology Aurora in Four Voices contains five of her stories, including the titular novella, "Light and Shadow" (the first story in the Sage of the Skolian Empire), and her Nebula Award-winning "Spacetime Pool." Now she is looking to release the anthology as an audiobook, narrated by performer Sylvia Roldán Dohi. For a $25 pledge, she is offering backers a digital download of the audiobook anthology.

Speculative Relationships: A Sci-fi Romance Comics Anthology

Romance comics head to space in this brand-new anthology, featuring the work of Mike Manomivibul, Isabella Rotman, Daniel Warren Johnson, Rinko Endo, Scott Kroll, and Tyrell Cannon—and you can check out the pitches for each story on the Kickstarter campaign page. For a $5 pledge, backers can get a PDF of the anthology. For a $15 pledge, backers can grab the physical book.

Don't Hug Me I'm Scared : The Series

If you haven't yet witnessed the puppety weirdness of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, take some out of your day to watch these two videos. They truly defy description:

Want to see more? The crew is looking to make four more episodes, with a little funding help. For a £5 pledge, backers will receive digital downloads of each episode, plus the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared album, complete with karaoke versions of each song.
