Rotating shift work is remarkably unpleasant. The frequent changes from day to night work have previously been linked to cancer and heart problems, and new research has shown that it also can cause an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in women. This discovery applies to those poor, unfortunate souls who have to switch between day and night shifts on a regular basis. More »

Over 50% of Americans drink coffee on a daily basis, and that figure is thought to be increasing every year. More »

This new discovery could lead to treatments for both conditions. More »

Many diabetics endure daily finger pricks to test their blood sugar levels. But advances in nanotechnology could soon mean that diabetics need endure the needle only once: to get a glucose-tracking tattoo. More »

Not content with trying to warn us about the impending destruction of the planet Earth, it now appears that dolphins may also hold the key to curing a strain of diabetes. For diabetics, finger pricking could be a thing of the past. A biochemical engineer has developed contact lenses embedded with nanoparticles that react with the glucose in tears. As glucose levels change, so does the color of the lens. A group of medical researchers has discovered that promiscuous males are prone to diabetes and less able to handle stress. In a rather odd study published today in biology journal Disease Models and Mechanisms, scientists showed a correlation between a tendency to sleep around and a vulnerability to the disease that affects blood sugar levels. Does that mean getting married and settling down will cure your diabetes? More »
