Although a few dinosaurs were adapted to live underwater, most dinosaurs were landlubbers through and through. And perhaps no dinosaur had less business going for a swim that this fellow, the heavily-armored, 13,000-pound Ankylosaurus. More »

Rapetosaurus was a huge, plant-eating dinosaur much like the brachiosaurus. It's one of a family of dinosaurs that had a huge, hollow bone growing in its back. Known as an osteoderm, paleontologists are only now discovering what it was for. More »

How dinosaurs spent their lives remains a great mystery of paleontology. We know they ate a lot, and presumably they had sex somehow. But it's almost impossible to prove the existence of more complex dinosaur behaviors...until now. More »

The image of the hulking T. rex and its comically undersized arms is deeply ingrained in pop culture, but it isn't really fair. Sharks weren't always the huge, vicious alpha predators that they are today. Hundreds of millions of years ago, they were just another tiny little harmless fish species hanging out in lakes and rivers. It might not be immediately obvious just how birds could evolve something as complex as the wings needed for flight. But that's just it: flight was basically incidental to the real adaptation. This is Dimetrodon, the world's top predator about 270 million years ago. Living before the dawn of the dinosaurs, this striking creature was actual a distant ancestor of mammals like us. Now we've discovered the most complete Dimetrodon skeleton ever. More »

The complex evolutionary relationships between birds and dinosaurs has only really started to become clear in the last 15 years. But one brave thinker in 1897 knew the real truth: it was all down to birds and reptiles doing it. More »

Dinosaur eggs dating back to the early Jurassic are revealing amazing secrets about dinosaurs. These particular dinosaurs were born quadrupedal, then learned how to walk upright, revealing drastic physical changes and a very human-like reliance on their parents during infancy. More »

Popular images of the prehistoric world are filled with spiny stegosauri, placid brachiosaurs, and rampaging tyrannosaurus rex. But one image we may need to revise is that of pterodactyls flying overhead. New research suggests the winged lizards were far too massive to stay aloft, although some paleobiologists are inclined to disagree. More »
