Brachiosaurus is estimated to have weighed close to thirty metric tons. Put two of these behemoths together, and you're dealing with upwards of 125,000 pounds of dinosaur. More »

Rapetosaurus was a huge, plant-eating dinosaur much like the brachiosaurus. It's one of a family of dinosaurs that had a huge, hollow bone growing in its back. Known as an osteoderm, paleontologists are only now discovering what it was for. More »

Dinosaurs ruled Earth for 160 million years, but they didn't get that way by running everywhere. What little we can tell about dinosaur anatomy suggests they could barely run at all. But they could power walk...thanks to their muscular rumps. More »

So difficult, in fact, that until 1986, no one had recovered so much as a single dinosaur specimen from the continent's icy grip. More »

Even if we can't observe how fast dinosaurs ran in real life (at least for now), there's nothing that says we can't do our damnedest to figure it out experimentally. After all, if dinosaurs do make their big comeback, questions like "how fast do they run?" and "wait a minute...how fast can I run?" are precisely what you'll want answered. More »

An international team of researchers has used three-dimensional laser scans to determine that Tyrannosaurus rex were likely 30% more massive that we once thought — and a whole lot hungrier. Be honest, now...how many of you woke up this morning thinking you'd hear the words "three-dimensional laser" and "Tyrannosaurus rex" used in the same sentence? More »

Researchers say this specimen is about as close to perfect as fossils come. Unveiled yesterday by scientists from the Bavarian paleontological and ecological collections (BSPF) in Munich, Germany, the unnamed dinosaur is believed to be 98% complete, and even includes bits of preserved skin. More »

One of the most recognizable characteristics of raptor dinosaurs — the clever, pack-hunting carnivores immortalized in the Jurassic Park movie series — is the enormous, scythe-like talon located on the second digit of each of their feet. Today a group of paleontologists announced the results of an extensive study of several well-preserved dinosaur feathers encased in amber. Their work, which included samples from many stages in the evolution of feathers, bolstered the findings of other scientists who've suggested that dinosaurs (winged and otherwise) had multicolored and transparent feathers of the sort you might see on birds today. The researchers also presented evidence, based on the feathers' pigmentation and structures, that today's bird feathers could have evolved from dinosaur feathers. More »

Designer and dinosaur enthusiast David Orr recently griped on his blog Love in the Time of Chasmosaurs about the clichéd dino-on-dino fights you see in pop culture - always with the super-giant T Rex vs. brontosaurus. Or, as Orr's colleague Marc Vincent put it, you'll see "freakishly large coelurosaurs Tarbosaurus and Therizinosaurus smack each other about in all their varyingly inaccurate CG splendour." Well, we wouldn't want that, would we? Especially with dino-tastic TV series Terra Nova starting up soon. And that's why Orr suggested some crazily improbable dino fights that he'd like to see. More »
