With the election less than three weeks away, the liberal blogosphere is debating furiously... about driverless cars. Picking up on an article by Tim Lee over at Ars Technica, Matthew Yglesias at Think Progress gets excited by the idea that self-driving cars could eliminate the need for much parking space. After all, cars could park themselves anywhere, and move themselves at a moment's notice if they were in the way. But Kevin Drum at Mother Jones is skeptical: "If we ever do build a genuinely self-driving car, it means we're only a stone's throw away from nearly human-level artificial intelligence. More efficient parking will be the least of our worries at that point." More »

Robot cars are making huge leaps forward, judging from the fact that driverless vehicles are conquering two very different types of terrain. A driverless car will ferry visitors through the volcanic wasteland of Vulcania, and a robot snowmobile will race around the Antarctic, surveying regions humans can't easily reach. Is this the beginning of a new class of adventure bots on wheels? Click through to find out. More »

The next few decades will see miraculous improvements in consumer technology — and new and better rip-offs to go with them. No matter how advanced our science, corporations will still find ways to spam, scam and invade your privacy. Those shiny new toys will break down... or break your neck. Here's our future history of the lawsuits and nightmares you'll be reading about from now until 2038. More »
