Millions of years ago, Europe was a vast savanna full of giraffes, elephants, and rhinos. There was also at least one hominid ape, according to a fossilized tooth recently discovered in Bulgaria. Meet the latest complication in our evolutionary story. <a href="http://io9.com/5876261/the-last-european-great-ape-lived-7-million-years-ago" title="Click here to read more about The last European great ape lived 7 million years ago">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

The extinction of the Neanderthals remains a matter of intense debate. Were we smarter than them? More warlike? Or perhaps <a href="http://io9.com/5822357/confirmed-all-non+african-people-are-part-neanderthal">we simply sexed them into extinction</a>? The real answer might have more to do with our <em>quantity</em> than our qualities.<!-- %JUMP:More &raquo;% --> <a href="http://io9.com/5826353/there-were-just-too-many-humans-for-neanderthals-to-survive" title="Click here to read more about There were just too many humans for Neanderthals to survive">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Climate has been the secret driver of history, particularly in the preindustrial world. Empires and kingdoms rose to power when it was warm and wet and toppled when it became cool and dry...and climate might not be done guiding history. <a href="http://io9.com/5732533/climate-change-has-guided-2500-years-of-european-history" title="Click here to read more about Climate change has guided 2,500 years of European history">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

China plans to launch 15 rockets, 17 satellites and a crewed spaceship during 2008. But that's not going to be enough to scare the United States into launching a new space race. And the U.S. really, really needs a new space race to get us to take space exploration seriously again. <a href="http://io9.com/346927/the-us-needs-a-space-race-with-china" title="Click here to read more about The U.S. Needs A Space Race With China">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>
