Long before there were websites like this one, there were fanzines &mdash; lovingly created hand-crafted tributes to all things science fictional, in which everybody could express their viewpoints. The Atlanta Journal Constitution has a wonderful profile of Cuyler "Ned" Brooks, a former NASA engineer who's been creating fanzines for 50 years. Says Baen Books' Toni Weisskopf: <a href="http://io9.com/5626847/meet-the-man-whos-been-creating-science-fiction-fanzines-for-50-years" title="Click here to read more about Meet the man who's been creating science fiction fanzines for 50 years">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

The clunky backgrounds, blaring Midi sound files, and ugly ads... there's a lot we won't miss about Geocities when it shuts down today. But it was home to tons of <a class="autolink" title="Click here to read more posts tagged #fansites" title="Click here to read more posts tagged #fansites" href="http://io9.com/tag/fansites/">fan sites</a> and science-fiction resources: here are some we'll miss. <a href="http://io9.com/5389825/the-greatest-science-fiction-sites-well-miss-on-geocities/gallery/" title="Click here to read more about The Greatest Science Fiction Sites We'll Miss On Geocities">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Having abandoned mainstream comics, <em>Watchmen</em> creator <a class="autolink" title="Click here to read more posts tagged ALAN MOORE" title="Click here to read more posts tagged ALAN MOORE" href="http://io9.com/tag/alan-moore/">Alan Moore</a> is turning to fanzines for new project <em><a class="autolink" title="Click here to read more posts tagged DODGEM LOGIC" title="Click here to read more posts tagged DODGEM LOGIC" href="http://io9.com/tag/dodgem-logic/">Dodgem Logic</a></em>. The 40-page bi-monthly zine offering (in Moore's words) "subterranean exotica in a bleached-out cultural and social landscape" launches next month. 85 years old this month, <em>Weird Tales</em> is the magazine of the "bizarre and unusual" that sustained the career of H.P. Lovecraft and his scifi-horror pals back in the 1920s when it first launched. In its early days, <em>Weird Tales</em> set itself apart from other pulps by always going one step deeper into the freak zone. Stories dealt with aliens, witches, and mutants. Covers often featured devils making love to ladies, monsters menacing beleaguered ingenues, and (my personal favorite, above) devilish monster ladies making love to scantily clad lovelies. Now the venerable, perverted, brilliant magazine is celebrating its 85th birthday in style. <a href="http://io9.com/378613/celebrate-the-85th-anniversary-of-weird-tales" title="Click here to read more about Celebrate the 85th Anniversary of Weird Tales">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>
